Sort It Out! is a board game and App in which players' are given 3, 4 or 5 items that they must attempt to place in the correct order according to a given topic. The game is the US version of a game called Sorts created in Australia in 2006 by Craig Browne. While looking at the 'top books' and 'highest grossing movie' lists in The Sun Herald newspaper, Craig was reminded of people's fascination with lists and the order of things and decided that this was a great idea for a board game. In fact his prototype for the game was initally called TOOT - The Order Of Things. Sorts was licensed to the Australian games company, Crown and Andrews and intially released in Australia in 2006-7. Over the next 3 years the game was licensed to other game manufacturers around the world - being released under a variety of different names:
- Sortivity - in Germany by games company, Piatnik
- Class Cinq - in France by games company, MegaBleu
- Sort It Out! - in the USA, Canada, United Kingdom by games company, University Games.
Various 'junior' versions of the game have also been released: Sorts For Kids (by Crown and Andrews in Australia) and Sort It Out! Junior in the USA by University Games. Sorts For Kids was awarded Best Australian Game 2009 by Boardgames Australia.
In 2010, Sort It Out! was awarded Game Of The Year by the US Toy Industry Association.
Dozens of question sets have been released for the game. The question cards are organized into themes; for instance, in the standard Genus question set, questions in green deal with science and nature. Some question sets have been designed for younger players, and others for a specific time period or as promotional tie-ins (such as Star Wars, Saturday Night Live, and The Lord of the Rings movies).
Setup
- The gameboard is placed in the centre of the play area with a pile of topic cards next to it.
- Each player takes a coloured token, 5 different coloured tiles (blue, orange, pink, green, yellow) and a tile holder.
Gameplay
- A random topic card is picked, read aloud to all players and placed in a position where everyone can see it.
Apps
In March 2012, University Games released the Sort It Out! App for iPod and iPhone through Apple's App Store. The App presents a player with 3, 4 or 5 items on screen and allows them to drag the items up and down in an attempt to place them in the correct order. The main game was made available free of charge with additional question packs available for purchase.
