The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man: A Memoir is a posthumous memoir of the life of Paul Newman, published in 2022, that is based on transcripts of audio tapes of Newman, his friends and family, recorded by screenwriter Stewart Stern. The book is edited by David Rosenthal, forrmerly publisher of Simon & Schuster, and includes a forward by his daughter xxx and and afterward by XXX.

The transcripts were also the basis of a 2022 documentary series, The Last Movie Stars, The book delves into Newman's personal and professional life, disclosing details of his upbringing, his rise as an actor, his marriages and the death of his son Scott Newman.

Background

The book is based on transcribed conversations spanning the years 1986 and 1991 between Newman and Stern, who died in 2015. The tapes were subsequently lost. and the project was abandoned by the two men 1991. The project was revived after Newman’s death by his children. Interspersed into the narrative are reflections from former colleagues, friends and family members.[1]

Critical reception

The Wall Sreet Journal called the memoir "twice the book one could have dared to hope for, a narrative that is astute, introspective and surprisingly graceful."[1]
