Rob Rombout, born in Amsterdam in 1953, is a filmmaker and professor of documentary cinema. Since 1988, he has been teaching directing at Sint Lukas (LUCA) in Brussels, he has also been a professor at INSAS, RITS, Lusofona (Lisbon), at the University of Paris 8 and at Marc Bloch, Strasbourg. He is co-founder of the international master of documentaries: "Doc-Nomads" bringing together students from all over the world. The program is spread across several global institutions. Rob Rombout also leads workshops around the world (Brazil, Vietnam, China, Canada, United States, Lebanon)
Since L’homme qui en disait trop (The Man Who Said Too Much) in 1985, he has directed around fifteen documentaries, several of which have won international awards. Notably "Entre deux tours" (1987), Perm-mission (1999), Le Piège de Kerguelen (2000), Amsterdam via Amsterdam (co-directed with Rogier van Eck), Queen Mary 2, Birth of a legend (2004) or even Amsterdam Stories (2012) which relates a journey through the cities of Amsterdam in the United States.

Rob Rombout's documentaries are based on practices commonly associated with fiction while applying these processes to other documentaries. He recently made a film on the Dutch writer Robert van Gulik (In the footsteps of Robert van Gulik, 2015, 87 min).
Rob Rombout was a member of the "Brouillon d'un rêve" commission (SCAM Paris) and of the Brussels Audiovisual Center Commission, of the VAF (Vlaams Audiovisueel Fonds), but also vice-president of the Belgian Committee of SCAM from 1998 to 2005, and from 2009 to 2013.
