History

Phase 1: Conceptualization (2019)

Limelight Music Inc. was conceptualized by Bilal Khalid in May 2019 as a platform that would connect talented independent artists with music fans who want to discover good music. Bilal had noticed a growing trend of artists paying for music promotion to his network of followers, and realized that there was a huge problem in the industry with independent artists being overshadowed by major-label funded artists.

Phase 2: Limelight 1.0 (2019-2020)

Bilal developed the first iteration of the Limelight app, reaching #4 of the Apple App Store (Music Category). During this phase, Bilal learned to develop an app to market the service on various digital platforms, including Twitter and Instagram. He also forged partnerships with various digital marketing experts and connected with Atlantic Records, receiving commendable verbal feedback. Limelight gained 20,000 app downloads and over 300 paid users, amounting to $1000 in revenue per month.

Phase 3: Limelight 2.0 (2020)

Bilal realized that the mobile platform needed further fine-tuning to avoid marketing fatigue, and recruited a focused team to achieve further success with the Limelight platform. The team re-designed the user experience to be seamless for the user, added additional capabilities for artists, and reconfigured the algorithm. During this phase, Limelight was accepted into AC JumpStart, a seed funding and mentorship program, and received $30,000 in seed capital. The Limelight team spent nearly 30 hours in one-to-one mentorship to refine and perfect their product.

Phase 4: Limelight 3.0 (2021)

Limelight 3.0 was developed to integrate missing features, including an app that could be found on the Google PlayStore (for Android users), digital distribution, and a system to claim ownership of something that can be easily and endlessly duplicated. The goal of Limelight 3.0 was to have the ability for the entire market of users to join the Limelight Music network. The app was developed using Flutter to have a complete framework, widgets, and tools, that gives developers an easy way to build and deploy visually attractive, fast mobile apps on both Android and iOS platforms.

Current Phase (2021-2022)

As of 2021, Limelight has gained significant traction and support from independent artists, with over 25,000 total app downloads (since MVP release and re-release) and a peak monthly userbase of 7134 users. The company has also filed formally as a corporation, developed a provisional patent filing, and developed a corporate minute with shareholders' agreements and other relevant legal documentation in place. Limelight's Supporters feature was launched in December 2021, which enables loyal fans to tip their favorite artist’s music.

Overall, Limelight has established itself as a promising platform for independent artists to gain exposure and connect with new fans, and continues to evolve and improve its services to meet the needs of its users.
