Prince Al Zengi, Prince Akram Shammaa Al Zengi (Mohammad Akram Bin Mostafa Bin Mohammad Shammaa Al Zengi III; Arabic: محمد اكرم شماع بن مصطفى بن محمد شماع الزنكي born 28 August 1930) is a Prince of Al Zengid Dynasty. A lawyer and a real estate investor. He is a descendent of the Zengid Dynasty That ruled Syria and Parts of Iraq between 1127 and 1234 [1][2]


Early life

Prince Akram was the second son of Mostafa Shammaa Al Zengi, in 1964 he graduated from the law school of the University of Damascus, and in 1967 he sued the Syrian government for ceasing the family properties and assets that were loaned to the Islamic endowment (الاوقاف) since 1856; he was kidnapped and tortured, he escaped to Lebanon where he worked in Textile industry. In 1982 when the Lebanese civil war broke, he went back to Syria under the condition of not getting involved in politics.[3] He was a civil right activist and an opposition leader. He opposed the Military regimes that stamped the era of the syrian history between 1950's and 1970's including Adib al-Shishakli , Husni al-Za'im and Hafez al-Assad.

Career

He worked as a lawyer between 1964 and 1967 when he was banned from practicing law after suing the Syrian government for ceasing the family assets in 1947.[4] Between 1971 and 1982 he worked in the textile industry in Lebanon. Afterwards he was allowed to return to Syria and since then he is working as an investor in the real estate field.

Political career

In 1963 and while a student at the Law school he formed and lead a movement against the military government of Luai al-Atassi Chairman of the National Revolutionary Command Council in Syria calling for the end of emergency law, he was arrested for 1 week and later released. He filed several sues against syrian governments for the prejudice arrests of syrian political activists, corruption and over taking family properties[5].

Marriage and Family

In 1967 he got married to Maysa Morjan. They have 1 son and 2 daughters. His son is Prince Riam Shammaa Al Zengi.
