Wikipedia Assignment

Comparison Paragraph

This assignment has allowed me to seriously consider and reflect on the content of articles within Wikipedia. At first I could not think of any anrticles I would find interesting. So I then headed to the featured content section of Wikipedia's website. This is always a good place to start if you don't have a clear idea about what you're looking for. This is also an option encyclopedias don't have which is unfortunate because it can lead people to learning new things. After getting there I browsed through the featured content looking for something that sounded interesting. I found a link to Homer's page through the featured poetry content. After that it was easy to find more topics that I would like to research. I chose these topics because they are interesting and I will enjoy researching and learning more about them. For the encyclopedia articles I found all of my articles on Britannica Online.

When comparing the two types of encylopedias there are a few major differences. On a first glance between the two articles the Wikipedia one is always more general and uses much simpler language. While the Britannica articles are a lot longer and they use a more professional language style because it is aimed at scholars rather than the general public. Both articles provide a good amount of depth however when doing a research project the encyclopedia articles seemed a lot more informative than the Wikipedia articles. While the encyclopedia had a good amoutn of information it was lacking in newer information. Wikipedia on the other hand is constantly being updatedso there are many more new topics. Overall both seemed to have a decent amount of information, but I look forward to doing more research on it.

Assignment 2

Article Summaries

The Wikipedia article I have chosen is about Thucydides. This article covers all the main things in his life. The first thing that is covered in the article is his life and information about him. Since he lived so long ago this part of the article discusses sources in which he is referred to. The main source about Thucydides comes from the book which he wrote: The History of the Peloponnesian War. The article then delves into further sources relating to his life and how he was exiled from Athens which allowed him to see The Peloponnesian War from both sides.

The rest of the article discusses Thucydides and Herodotus who came after Thucydides. He wrote the history of Ancient Greece during the Persian Wars. The article then goes on to explain Thucydides influence on western history as well as western civilization. The article also list quotes about Thucydides and some of his most famous quotes and how he is related to popular culture today. This article is very detailed and contains a good amount of information on Thucydides.

The article from Britannica Online article also discusses his life, his study of the wars technical aspects, his style and his historical aims. In this article it goes more in depth with guessing when he was born because there is no actual date the contributors base this guess on how old he was when he wrote his book. It also bases this on the fact that Thucydides was elected a military magistrate in 424 so he had to be older than thirty at that time. The article then goes into further depth about his life and his exile.

The article also discusses how he studied the war and wrote about it, and the fame that he should have had but it doesn't seem like he was recognized for his work until a few generations later. This article discusses many of Thucydides views and that when he wrote it always hat to do with war. This article is a great resource of information on Thucydides.

Article Comparison

Both of these articles contain important information on Thucydides and there are some similarities and some differences. The main thing that both of these articles discuss about Thucydides is his life. These articles discuss how he lived in Greece and was an author and that he wrote The History of the Peloponnesian War. Another similarity from the two articles is that neither of them mention any sort of female companion in his life. These articles don't mention a mother, a sister or even a wife but mention his father. This articles both show how little importance women had in the lives of men in Ancient Greece.

One major difference is that the Britannica article delves much deeper into his life, and trying to figure out when he was born. The Wikipedia article has only a paragraph on his life with only the basic information in it. While the Britannica article discusses his father's name and his family background. The Britannica article also further explains Thucydides life in Athens and his later exile and how that affected his view of the war.

The Britannica article focuses more on the facts about his life while the Wikipedia article uses more current sources to connect readers. The Wikipedia article includes popular culture as well as quotes about his life and that he said. The Wikipedia article also has a much lighter feel to it simply because the language is based at a people with higher education. The Britannica online article however uses many uses much more scholarly like words. This is because it is aimed at people with higher education. Both articles are generally simple to read, however if a student in high school was researching Thucydides they might not comprehend some of the terminology that is used.

Future Reading

For further reading the Britannica Online article had a lot more resources available. It showcased all the books that were used and provided direct links to the articles that were used. The Britannica online version also include links to videos which is convenient because it allows a different type of learner to still access reliable information. Even though the information provided in the further reading section is good, most of the sources are a few years old and more up to date versions would be better. Just because this is an old topic doesn't mean it isn't relevant today and people that are studying Thucydides will need to be updated with the newest opinions on his life and work.

Wikipedia had a around the same amount of option if you were interested in further reading. A few books and articles were listed. However there was no media content listed which is kind of outdated. Just like the other sources provided they were all a few years old and could be updated or newer papers could be found to further explore Thucydides life.

Article Quality

The Wikipedia article is of good enough quality to inform someone interested in Thucydides about his life and the most basic and key points within his life. However if a student were to be doing an in depth project on Thucydides the Wikipedia article wouldn't be sufficient enough. The Britannica article is a much better article simply because it does go further into depth on everything in Thucydides life. Also because there are many more links for further reading the student would be able to find trustworthy and reliable sources that relate to Thucydides. Overall it would be better to use the Britannica online article when doing a project but if one simply had an interest in Thucydides the Wikipedia article would be the better option simply because it is easier reading.
