· Add hyperlinks to related Wikipedia pages, especially on topics like the semi-empirical theories to which you refer in the Lead. I would also consider adding more hyperlinks throughout, such as to the triple product or selection rules.
· Consider adding citations with examples after this sentence: “Group 14 analogues of alkenes and alkynes have previously been prepared.”
· The sentence “Moving down the group, the compounds become increasing geometric distortion, becoming increasingly trans-bent from the original linear geometry and displaying increasingly limited shortening of the multiple bond” is unclear à consider changing the word “become” to “undergo”
· I would swap the order of the two sentences under the “Valence bond resonating pair” rationalization. It would be good for all three of the rationalizations listed under “Semiempirical approaches” to follow the same format (consisting of a description of the rationalization, followed by a consideration of whether it is consistent with other theories.
· Add a citation for the trans-pyramidalization distortion example. Figures would also be helpful to illustrate this, especially because it’s a phenomenon concerning geometry.
o Similarly, I would add a citation for the alkyne analogue example.
· At some point I think you should explicitly define what differentiates second order Jahn-Teller distortion from garden variety first order JT.
· This article is neutral and does a good job representing multiple approaches/viewpoints while still presenting one particular topic and approach in context.
· Overall, I think this is really good and could just use some additional figures and citations throughout. I think you only really need one representative figure, but more can’t hurt if you want to make more. In terms of citations, I think you have a good bibliography but probably just need to add more superscript citations in the text. Your article met all of the criteria on the Peer Review Checklist.
