Evaluate an article

  • English Studies: (English studies)
  • I have chosen this article because none of the C-Class and WikiProjects that I chose made sense to me, so I chose an academic one that seemed interesting to me.

Lead

Lead evaluation

  • The Lead includes an introductory sentence that introduces the topic of English as a discipline and differentiates it from English as a second language.
  • The Lead includes a description of the English discipline as a whole, which includes its major sections, but it does not explicitly introduce them with links like most Leads do.
  • The Lead offers an overview of the information that is in the article.
  • The Lead is concise in the beginning, but in the last paragraph it seems to list courses that may be taught in the English department for too long.

Content

Content evaluation

  • The content of the article is relevant to the topic, and offers in depth information about English studies. The article offers multiple external links for if you wanted to learn more about a specific topic mentioned in the article.
  • The content within the article is up to date.
  • All of the content within the article seems correctly placed.

Tone and Balance

Tone and balance evaluation

  • The article appears to be neutral.
  • The "History" section of the article is longer than the other sections, but it seems justified considering the expansive history that English studies has.
  • The article does not attempt to persuade the reader to form a certain opinion about the topic.

Sources and References

Sources and references evaluation

  • All of the facts in the article seem reliable.
  • There are 14 sources, the article as a whole could be expanded to include more sources, but for the information that is presented, there seems to be enough source material.
  • Not all of the sources are current, but when taking into account how long English studies has been around, it seems necessary to include some sources that aren't considered current.
  • The links that I tried all worked.

Organization

Organization evaluation

  • The article is concise and easily read by the average person.
  • There are no known errors in the article.
  • The article is well organized, although there could be more sections that reflect different points of the topic.

Images and Media

Images and media evaluation

  • There are no images in the article except for the one that is included in the "Literature" Wikipedia page that is linked.

Checking the talk page

Talk page evaluation

  • Conversations that are being had are, "Is an English degree viable," "Noticeable Shift Towards a More 'Technical' English B.A.."
  • Before the article was merged with the "English major" article, it was deemed as a "Poor Article" because it was "biased" toward English studies.
  • There are two WikiProjects on the talk page. One is WikiProject Literature and the other is WikiProject Education.

Overall impressions

Overall evaluation

  • The article provides a nice overview of different disciplines within English studies without being too wordy, because it lists links to Wikipedia pages on those disciplines instead of describing them. It also provides a nice history of English studies.
  • I think there could be even more topics introduced into the article.
  • For what it is, the article is complete and well-developed. As stated above, I think the article could go into more detail.
