Rodolfo Comerio is an Italian engineering limited liability company, founded in 1878 in Busto Arsizio, known for the design and manufacturing of calendering lines for rubber and plastics.

History

Fonderie ed Officine Meccaniche Rodolfo Comerio

Rodolfo Comerio S.r.l. was born as "Fonderie ed Officine Meccaniche Rodolfo Comerio" and was founded by Rodolfo Comerio in 1878 in Busto Arsizio, city nicknamed "Italian Manchester" because of the textile industry that prospered there. The company was manufacturing calenders and textile padders for textile finishing [2].

Rodolfo Comerio planer- Early 20th century

At the beginning of the new century, the outbreak of First World War led to an industrial conversion from peace into war economy, with an increase in production of railway, automotive, naval, and aeronautical material. Enrico Comerio, son of Rodolfo Comerio, expanded the business by adding the design and manufacturing of machine tools with center lathes and closed planers.

Rodolfo Comerio - First 3-roll calender, 1925

The company reached the third generation with Rodolfo Comerio, grandson of Enrico Comerio, who directed the industrial activity towards the production of machineries for rubber processing. In 1925, the company manufactured the first 3-roll calender for the production of tire carcass for Pirelli industries in Milan.

Rodolfo Comerio - Calender for PVC processing for Montecatini, 1942

The significant entry of PVC into the market in the 1920s required new studies on the processing of plastics and in 1942 the company supplied the Montecatini Group in Milan with the first calender in Italy for high temperature processing of PVC film.

Rodolfo Comerio - Interior of Solbiate Olona plant

From 1960 the company is headed by the fourth generation, with Enrico Comerio and Carlo Comerio, sons of Rodolfo Comerio, who respectively hold the positions of Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer. In 1981 the company moved to its current location in Solbiate Olona to cope with the expansion of production.

Also in the early 1980s, the company designed and built the first combined calendering lines for textile and steel cord rubberizing for the tire industry.

Having overcome the world economic crisis at the beginning of the new millennium, in 2017 the company restructured the offices and production site in Solbiate Olona.
