Brett Findlay (born October 13, 1992) is a Canadian professional ice hockey Right Wing journeyman currently playing with the Stockton Heat of the American Hockey League (AHL). Originally signed by the Toronto Maple Leafs as an undrafted free-agent, Findlay has spent his entire professional career in the minor league system.

Playing career

Amateur

Sault Cambrian Titans

Findlay began his amateur hockey career in Sault Ste. Marie with the AA Midget Sault Cambrian Titans in the Sault Major Hockey Association, which is a member of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association. He spent two seasons with the Titans, and is fourth on the franchise's all-time points and goal list[1][2].

Blind River Beavers

The 2009-2010 season was Findlay's most successful season to date. Findlay joined the Blind River Beaver of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League, in Blind River, Ontario. At the completion of the regular season, Findlay amassed a franchise record 87 points[3]. This productive season had him finish third in league scoring[4]. The team lost in the first round of the playoffs in 5 games to the Soo Eagles. Although the team was upset in the playoffs, this season helped Findlay gain attention from Ontario Hockey League scouts.

Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds

Findlay spent two seasons of his three seasons in the OHL with the Greyhounds, signing as a free-agent in 2010.[1] His first season was successful finishing fifth in team scoring. The team was not as successful, missing the playoffs and finishing 5th in their division[5]. The 2011-2012 was much of the same with Findlay developing and finishing second in team scoring, but the team once again falling short and missing the playoffs[5].

Texas Brahmas

On March 30th, 2012, Findlay was signed to an amateur-tryout contract by the now defunct Texas Brahmas of the also defunct Central Hockey League. Findlay played 11 games for the Brahmas, all in the playoffs, registering 6 points, good enough for third on the team.[1][6]

Peterborough Petes

On June 6th, 2012, Findlay was traded by the Greyhounds to the Peterborough Petes in exchange for a 15th round draft pick in the 2014 OHL Priority Selection and two conditional draft picks. General Manager of the Petes, David Reid said that "“The Peterborough Petes are pleased to be adding Brett Findlay to our organization. Brett is a veteran OHL player who has proven he can contribute offensively and is a quality young man who will bring experience to our young group of forwards. Brett brings the experience we were looking for at the centre position and will be an important part of our team in the upcoming season."[7] Findlay once again led a team in scoring with 46 points, but the Petes missed the playoffs for the third straight season.

Professional

San Francisco Bulls

In hopes to transition from junior hockey to the professional ranks, Findlay signed with the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) San Francisco Bulls on March 20th, 2013.[1] Findlay played the final 6 games of the regular season in 2013 and played the first round of the playoffs. In 2014 Findlay finished second in team scoring, but in a shortened season due to the Bulls franchise folding mid-season.[8][9] Findlay finished as the Bulls fourth leading scorer all-time.

Alaska Aces

Due to the folding of the San Francisco Bulls, Findlay joined the Alaska Aces of the ECHL mid-season. Findlay finished seventh in team scoring and help lead his new team to victory in the Kelly Cup Finals.[10] The Alaska Aces folded in 2017.[11]

Orlando Solar Bears

For parts of three seasons from 2014 to 2017, Findlay played for the Orlando Solar Bears of the ECHL. They are the ECHL affiliate for the Toronto Marlies Hockey Club of the American Hockey League. Throughout the three seasons Findlay played the most productive hockey of his career, averaging approximately a point per game pace.[1] After 96 games played, Findlay finished fifth all time in franchise scoring, and third all time in goals scored.[12]

Toronto Marlies

On August 8th, 2014, Findlay was signed by the Toronto Marlies, of the American Hockey League, the affiliate for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the NHL.[13] The Junior Hockey Network talked to Brett about signing his contract with the Marlies. “Its obviously a great feeling. If you would have asked me 6 years ago if I would be signing a pro contract with the Toronto Marlies and attending the rookie tournament of the team I grew up cheering for I wouldn’t have believed it. There is a lot of people who have helped me get here and I am very thankful for all the support my friends and family have given me”, said Findlay.[14]

Over parts of three seasons Findlay played 88 games while scoring 45 points. As a result of slow development in scoring totals the Marlies did not re-sign Findlay to the 2017-2018 season.[1]

Stockton Heat

On September 19th, 2017 the Calgary Flames signed and assigned Findlay to their affiliate, the Stockton Heat of the AHL.[15]
