John McNicol (26 December 1862 - 24 October 1940) was a Scottish painter and master gilder.

His father was John McNicol [Snr] (1 May 1830 - 16 May 1875), a spirit shopman from Islay, Argyll.^[6] He died from phthisis or tuberculous, death certificate stating he suffered it for 6 months.

His mother was Helen McKirdy (c. 1838 - 1922) from Partick, Glasgow, a dressmaker.^[7] John [Snr] and Helen married on 28 April 1857 in Govan, Glasgow.^[8] This was John [Snr]'s second marriage, the first was to Catherine Campbell.

John McNicol was born on 26 December 1862 in Partick, Glasgow.^[9]

He married Kate Dick (c. 1863 - 1940) from Glasgow.^[10] They married in 1884 in Kelvin, Glasgow.

His sons Ian McNicol became an artist and art dealer and Robert Alexander McNicol became an artist.

He died on 24 October 1940 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire.
