John McNicol (26 December 1862 - 24 October 1940) was a Scottish painter and master gilder.

His father was John McNicol [Snr] (1 May 1830 - 16 May 1875), a spirit shopman from Islay, Argyll.[6] He died from phthisis or tuberculous, death certificate stating he suffered it for 6 months.

His mother was Helen McKirdy (c. 1838 - 1922) from Partick, Glasgow, a dressmaker.[7] John [Snr] and Helen married on 28 April 1857 in Govan, Glasgow.[8] This was John [Snr]'s second marriage, the first was to Catherine Campbell.

John McNicol was born on 26 December 1862 in Partick, Glasgow.[9]

He married Kate Dick (c. 1863 - 1940) from Glasgow.[10] They married in 1884 in Kelvin, Glasgow.

His sons Ian McNicol became an artist and art dealer and Robert Alexander McNicol became an artist.
