Sudhir Maity is an Indian contemporary sculptor based in Kolkata. He has created a very personal form, where modernist orientation has merged with a lyrical sensibility.

Sudhir Maity was born in 1962 at Banadhia,Narayangarh, Paschim Medinipur. Some thirty years ago in the village Benadiha a picture was something that was hung as a calendar or printed in books. It was beyond the wildest dreams of anybody in that village that any of it sons or daughters become a painter or a sculptor in future. Books, for that matter, where a rarity in the maity househld. Neither the mother nor the father could read or write. The father, apart from farming his own land which was not much to talk about, built clay housed as a side profession. He was an expert in his house building jobs. He had ten children, six boys and four girls. Themselves illiterate and struggling to make both ends meet, the parents mades a point that the boys should go to school.After schooling he enrolled himself in a private art institute as Medinipur town. From here he got a real break when he was accepted as a student of the faculty of visual arts at Rabindra Bharati University.He became a very serious student of sculpture. He had a very good academic record and got gold medal both BVA and MVA.

In the contemporary context of modern Indian sculptur the contribution of sudhir misty as a scluptur is, no doubt, very enlightened. Though rooted to the rural tradition of village Bengal, he has created a very personal form, where modernist orientation merged with a lyrical sensibility.Lyricism is the prime characteristics of his works.Lyricism caters for a love for the life.He has transformed that,both personal and impersonal,love into a commitment for life and expressed it through dynamic form that at the same time absorbs and dispels light creating a chiroscuro both on the contours and surroding spaces.He takes his subjects from the pangible life and through the process of his creativity transmutes them into a intangible feeling,where enlightened rhythm gives rise to an ethereal essence.His works are thus at the same time rooted to the soil and mainfests and enlightened divine characteristic.Reality merges with dream into his compositional works.Reality is what he sees around him and how he communicates with them.Dream is how he contemplates for the ideal.Art is always a meditation for the idal.So some sort of dream is always associated with the process of creation or fabrication of art.But for Maity the dream is something different.He moves away from reality to come closer to the 'real',where 'real'is the synonyn fot truth.Through his form Maity strives for the truth,for the essence of life.
