Introduction

Makeup Finishing Spray, also known as setting spray, refers to a class of cosmetic products that hold makeup in place. There are a variety of other benefits to certain brands of finishing spray, but the main purpose is to set and hold makeup. The user typically applies a mist over freshly applied makeup to ensure that the makeup will not move as a result of heat, humidity, wind, skin conditions, or chemical reactions.

While there are have been products introduced to the market over the last couple of decades, there are very few who have gained traction with makeup users until recently. This is due in part to slow education of the market about this step in the makeup application process.

Finishing Sprays vs. Primers

A finishing or setting spray is not to be confused with primers. Primers are used to prepare the skin prior to makeup application, and do not provide the holding effect on the makeup that a finshing spray provides. Typically these are powder and cream based products. They also do not provide protection for the makeup against environmental factors, or body temperature increases like a finishing spray. Cinique, Smashbox, and Maybelline are all examples of companies who provide primers.

Formulas

There are a variety of formulas that are intended for use as a finishing spray on the market today. Most notably are Skindinavia which has been featured on The Today Show and is used by top makeup artists in Hollywood, and Model In A Bottle; which appeared on Oprah and Tyra Banks.

Many cosmetics afficionados have also been known to spray Evian water over their makeup to extend wear. While this provides a hydrating and rejuvenating effect to the makeup, it does not provide the hold and setting effect of a true finishing spray.

Professional Use

Professional makeup artists tend to make good use of makeup finishing sprays. The solutions help to prevent melting and sliding in the hot conditions under stage lighting. Ben Nye is a popular and powerful brand for the theatrical and live performance market, but not a popular solution for everyday or frequent use due to its drying effect. Skindinavia is a popular choice among makeup artists in Hollywood, offers a specific Stage and Set Product, and is the official finishing spray used at the world's first beauty school, Elegance International; located in Hollywood, California. It is also suitable for frequent use due to its highly hydrating effect. Model In A Bottle is another choice for common makeup artists and has been featured by Tyra Banks on her daytime TV show.

Warnings

Makeup finishing sprays are considered to be safe and are regulated by the Food And Drug Administration. However, users are encouraged to close their eyes and mouth when applying finishing spray. No serious injuries or side effects have been reported due to the use of finishing sprays.
