SpearIt is an American law professor and author. He is a Professor of Law at Thurgood Marshall School of Law, Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas. SpearIt has authored dozens of published works in the areas of religion and criminal justice, legal education, prison reform, and race theory. SpearIt’s most recent published work is his book, American Prisons: A Critical Primer on Culture and Conversion to Islam, which takes a critical focus on the role of race and religion in the American prison system.

Education

SpearIt received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy with a Minor in Psychology from the University of Houston. As an undergraduate, SpearIt was a member of Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society and graduated Magna Cum Laude. He graduated from Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts with a Master of Theological Studies degree, where he participated in the Fredrick Sheldon Traveling Fellowship and Carmen Fellowship. SpearIt continued his education at the University of California – Santa Barbara and received his Ph.D in Religious Studies, as well as a Certificate of College and University Teaching in Interdisciplinary Studies. At the University of California – Santa Barbara, SpearIt was a Teaching Fellow in the Law and Society Program and a STIA Fellow (Summer Teaching Institute for Associates) in the Office of Instructional Consultation. He received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Graduate Student Association, TA Development Grant in Instructional Development, and participated in the Eugene Cota-Robles Fellowship. He received his J.D. and Law and Technology Certificate at the University of California – Berkley School of Law (Boalt Hall). As a law student, SpearIt was a member of the Berkley Technology Law Journal.

Career

SpearIt worked as an Assistant Professor at Saint Louis University School of Law before becoming an Associate Professor at Thurgood Marshall School of Law. He has taught in the areas of Criminal Law, Evidence, Criminal Procedure, Professional Responsibility, Corrections Law, Sentencing, and Entertainment Law.

SpearIt has also served as a Fellow for the Institute for Social Policy & Understanding and on the Board of Governors for the Society of American Law Teachers.

SpearIt also serves as a contributing editor for The Islamic Monthly and Jotwell Criminal Law, and serves on the Corrections Committee for the American Bar Association.
