The direct origin of sokutai is the court dress called chōfuku (朝服) in ancient Japan. The word chōfuku is first found in an article from 685 in the Japanese history book Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan). In that year, Emperor Tenmu reformed the rank system and decided on different colors of court dress for different ranks.[1] It is not known what exactly the chōfuku of that time was, but it is thought to have incorporated elements of Tang dynasty court dress.[1]
