Honourable Artillery Company

I've restored the Honourable Artillery Company to the list, in light of its prior deletion it is probably worth pointing out to the causal observer that despite its name the HAC has been a predominantly infantry regiment for most of its history and its 1st and 2nd Battalions fought on the Western and Italian fronts in World War One. Source

What is the source for this? Some of the unit names seem odd. Saga City (talk) 08:34, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A lot of the names were changed on 1 January 1921 (by Army Order 509/1920), with the bracketed bit etc. being changed and titles "Green Howards" forming an official part of the name. The old and new titles were given in The Times on 9 December 1920: (Regimental Titles Changed, p.7, col.E)
  • The Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment) > The Royal Scots (The Royal Regiment)
  • The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) > The Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey)
  • The King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) > The King's Own Royal Regiment (Lancaster)
  • The King's (Liverpool Regiment) > The King's Regiment (Liverpool)
  • Prince Albert's (Somerset Light Infantry) > The Somerset Light Infantry (Prince Albert's)
  • The Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) > The West Yorkshire Regiment (The Prince of Wales's Own)
  • Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own (Yorkshire Regiment) > The Green Howards (Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own Yorkshire Regiment)
  • The Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment) > The Duke of Wellington's Regiment (west Riding)
  • The Loyal North Lancashire Regimant > The Loyal Regiment (North Lancashire)
  • Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire Regiment) > The Royal Berkshire Regiment (Princess Charlotte of Wales's)
  • The Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) > The Royal West Kent Regiment (Queen's Own)†
  • The King's Own (Yorkshire Light Infantry) > The King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry
  • The King's (Shropshire Light Infantry) > The King's Shropshire Light Infantry
  • The Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment) > The Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridge's Own)
  • The King's Royal Rifle Corps > The King's Royal Rifles†
  • The Duke of Edinburgh's (Wiltshire Regiment) > The Wiltshire Regiment (Duke of Edinburgh's Own)
  • The Prince of Wales's (North Staffordshire Regiment) > The North Staffordshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's)
  • The Royal Irish Rifles > The Royal Ulster Rifles
  • Princess Victoria's (Royal Irish Fusiliers) > The Royal Irish Fusiliers (Princess Victoria's)
  • Princess Louise's (Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) > The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louises's)

†Changed later in 1921 to the King's Royal Rifle Corps (AO 69/1921), Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment (AO 183/1921)

The spelling of "Welsh" was changed to "Welch" in 1920 by AO 56/1920, reported in The Times: The "Welch" Fusilers and Regiment 5 March 1920, p. 17, col.E
So presumably the pre 1920/21 titles are correct for 1914-1918. I see a couple of errors. Lozleader (talk) 13:56, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Think I've fixed them: there were a couple of 1881 titles in there!! Lozleader (talk) 14:09, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed move

"World War I" is an Americanism. Are there any objections to moving this to "British infantry regiments, First World War" and also changing the top line to say "First World War"? Moonraker (talk) 02:42, 3 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think there's any need to move the Template: its name is invisible to the reader. Lots of templates have condensed names that don't even use full words. OTOH the suggested change to the top line of the text appears to be justified: although it's not very accurate to call "World War I" an Americanism, the ratio of "World War I" to "First World War" in Corpus of Contemporary American English is 2942/723, whereas in British National Corpus it's 218/1023. jnestorius(talk) 00:11, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Strange order

Does anyone know why this template presents the regiments in such an artificial order? Why is the Highland Light Infantry listed as Scottish, but not Light Infantry? Or Royal Irish Rifles is not a Rifle Regiment? Smacks of WP:OR.

Also, why are Welsh Regiments listed before the Irish ones, and both before Light Infantry? Prince Albert's (Somerset Light Infantry) 13th Foot, then Royal Irish Regiment 18th Foot before Royal Welsh Fusiliers 23rd Foot?

Surely this should be in the normal British Army order of precedence? Hamish59 (talk) 20:00, 3 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

An no one has replied, I am going to be WP:BOLD and correct the order of the regiments. Hamish59 (talk) 13:14, 25 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
