Retrieved 17 August 2023. However, an act aimed to change bread's regulated price would be very unpopular, so it is not considered by Saied's populist government. In December 1983, the mere announcement of an increase in cereals' price, and consequently in bread's price, caused the so-called 'bread riots' [which went through] January 1984, as fiery demonstrations in the streets forced the then [Tunisian] president Habib Bourguiba to withdraw the proposal.
