- Talk:Lost-foam casting (section INCORRECT FROM WINAPESIA Lost-foam casting was invented in the early fifties by Canadian sculptor Armand Vaillancourt. Public recognition of the benefits of LFC was made by General Motors in the mid 1980s when it announced its new car line, Saturn, would utilize LFC for production of all engine blocks, cylinder heads, crankshafts, differential carriers, and transmission cases.[7] If you look at Vaillancourt 50s work you do not see many sculptures using the lost -foam system. Actually, the method was developed by Lucio Isolani, a sculptor and teacher in Pratt institute, with the help of John Spring the owner of the American Arts Foundry. I was given a tour while in Lincoln High school in Brooklyn in 1952 of Pratt Institute. It was to showcase the college art department. Isolani and Spring had rejuvenated a huge foundry and were experimenting with lost foam casting. The foundry had a big overhead crane and a small mountain of beach sand. They gave a dynamic demonstration of casting with Styrofoam. I was so impressed that years later I matriculated with both men and became a sand casting sculptor.)mountain of beach sand.
