removed section

Removed the following from the article because it doesn't fit, IMHO.

Some famous starfighter pilots of the Star wars Universe include:

It seems a bit odd to note only the SW fighter pilots. If we are, then we should put them in a seperate article and note other famous starfighter pilots as well (Starbuck and Apollo from BSG, Rick Hunter and Roy Fokker from Robotech, Buck Rogers from the 70s version of the franchise, etc. etc. etc.). Anyone else have an opinion on this?--Mitsukai 12:50, 27 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

revised section

I'm amending this section with a few lines about "Snubfighters" in Star Wars:

"Starfighter" is a science fiction term used to describe relatively small, maneuverable manned spacecraft designed for military combat (cf starship). Strictly speaking, the term "starfighter" only applies to those that can independently perform intersystem travel; "spacefighter" would be a more appropriate title for those that cannot.

Adding: In the Star Wars Universe, a Starfighter is a blanket term for all small combat space craft, regardless of Shields, Hyperspace capability, Weaponry (Unless it carries none), Armour, Maneuverability and Crew. "Snubfighter", though no concise definition has been given, refers to a fighter carrying Shielding, secondary weapons systems such as Proton Torpedoes or Concussion Missiles, and being hyperspace capable.

Ammend or delete if you see fit. - (Vainglory)

Starfighter vs. spacefighter

Strictly speaking, the term "starfighter" only applies to those that can independently perform intersystem travel; "spacefighter" would be a more appropriate title for those that cannot.

Why? --Yath 01:37, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Spacefighters, by implication, do not have the drives neccessary for superluminal motion and therefore must confine their operation to one solar system, unless there was some FTL carrier ship to take it. It cannot independently travel between stars, so it's only a spacefighter. It just has to be within space. A rudimentary spacefighter might be within our current technology, though barely, we'd never do it anytime soon, though. (If we were really that grimy we'd probably just nuke everyone — we're all on the same planet).

Starfighters, however have some kind of 'magic drive' and are capable of interstellar travel. They are able to fight between stars. We currently have no idea how to make a starfighter, it's against the current laws of physics.

This is somewhat semantic, each sci-fi universe uses whatever terms it sees fit.

Yeah... since each sci-fi universe uses whatever term it sees fit, this information isn't appropriate for an encyclopedia article, which should be based directly on the subject matter and not someone's conjecture. It belongs on someone's blog or some such. Removing.

"Star"-fighter ???

The correct term, which covers all spacecraft resembling fighter aircraft, is space fighter. I would even accept "fighter spacecraft". A starfighter is, by way of analogy with starship, a space fighter with the ability to travel between the stars. Please change the name of this article. 70.20.171.242 (talk) 01:59, 19 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Questionable article

I don't see how this isn't anything other than a big fat pile of WP:SYNTHESIS. Really, I mean, come on.  Xihr  05:01, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would go one step further and delete all this, completley unreferenced, stuff and make it a disambiguation page or a redirect. Calistemon (talk) 00:56, 2 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. I was expecting to find the content of Starfighter (disambiguation) here! -- Trevj (talk) 09:32, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
A load of unsourced fancruft. I've done a PROD, should have been done 10 years ago. Barsoomian (talk) 10:08, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Seconded. -- Trevj (talk) 11:22, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Some IP deleted the PROD, so now Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Starfighter. Barsoomian (talk)

From the AfD closer: "The result was Move/Merge/Dab. There are a lot of opinions here, and the main one appears to be that the content is notable but is not necessarily the primary usage of the term, and could be merged into similar articles. Taking the consensus as a whole, I have moved the article to Starfighter (science fiction), proposed a merge there, and turned Starfighter into a dab with the real-world aircraft as the primary target, by moving Starfighter (disambiguation) there and re-ordering it. Starfighter (disambiguation) therefore becomes redundant so I have deleted it. Black Kite (talk) 08:22, 23 July 2012 (UTC)"

I'm inclined to go through with the merge to Military spacecraft in fiction as that seems to be what most at the AfD thought appropriate. I'll wait a while for feedback though. Barsoomian (talk) 09:09, 23 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've updated the merge tag (and placed one on the destination article too) to point to the destination article talk page, per WP:MERGE. -- Trevj (talk) 21:08, 23 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
On second thought, Military spacecraft in fiction doesn't have any lists. The introductory text could go there though. List_of_fictional_spaceships#Military_.26_exploration would be a more appropriate place to put the lists of space fighters. Barsoomian (talk) 08:16, 24 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
