Audio

A recording of this sound would definitely add to this article. Cburnett 15:50, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Merger?

I think "rhonchi" could be included under "coarse crackles" in the page on "rales/crackles." rhetoric (talk) 04:08, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Too many of the standard physical exam textbooks classify Crackles as Discontinuous sounds while wheezes and Rhonchi are both classified as continuous sounds. So, although crackles and rhonchi have a similar quality to the sound, they are quite distinct in a few cases.
1. Rhonchi can be cleared (at least temporarily) by coughing. Crackles cannot be cleared by coughing
2. Rhonchi present from pathology higher in the respiratory system than do course crackles.
3. Rhonchi are not typically discreet (lasting around 5ms or less)
These are just a few reasons why I would not classify Rhonchi under course crackles.
This is covered more thoroughly in the standard medical physical exam textbooks (Bates, Mosby, Seidel).
