Problems

I've moved this page from List of current american orchestral Flutists to correct the capitalization and to remove "current". Wikipedia strongly discourages the use of time-sensitive words like "current", because there is no clear referent for current. This minute? A month ago? And what about the reader who looks at this list two years from now? I've added a one-line contextualization for the list as well, but I have a feeling that sooner or later it will be proposed for deletion for the following reasons:

  • A list like this goes out of date very quickly and needs constant maintenance. Its encyclopedic value is unclear.
  • I assume the names given all hold the position of Principal Flute but the list has no introduction stating that, and none of these players seem to be notable. In fact, several of the orchestras don't seem very notable either. Are they all fully professional orchestras?
  • The list is entirely unreferenced. It needs to have a reliable source (or sources) for these names.

I'd also suggest changing all the uses of "current" in the list to "present" Voceditenore (talk) 13:35, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Only one of the names has a (very short) entry of his own. Many of the orchestras are redlinked and are likely to remain so. Technically, the list should include every flautist from every "American" orchestra that has ever existed, given the lack of any focus beyond Voceditenore's "as of 2009" (NB not during 2009). Worse still "American" is undefined: I assume it means North American or rather, and more specifically, the USA but at present one could, in principle, add flautists from Canadian and Brazilian orchestras. I suggest AfDing it if PROD is considered too sneaky? --Jubilee♫clipman 22:24, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Proposed merger
After five years of this long-abandoned homework assignment being tagged as Unreferenced, still almost none of the list satisfies Wikipedia requirements for being notable and verifiable. I would strongly encourage merging any notable entries and re-directing to List of flautists#Western Classical, which is actively maintained, linked from key pages, integrated into WikiProjects, and viewed at least 10 times more often. Other opinions or objections? —Patrug (talk) 10:54, 21 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
