Military Service

Like Arthur Levenson, an unusual number of Levensons have served in the US and UK Armies. I will add my research at some point. One of them was a Tech Sergeant and one of the only non-African-Americans in the Tuskeegee Airmen (Finance NCO). Stephen Austin Levenson served in the RAF and was KIA during the battle of Britain. Abraham (New Mexico Volunteer Infantry) and Robert Levenson (Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry) served in the Infantry in the Spanish-American War.

Levenson, Major, British Army, led the 2/18th Hussars (Cavalry) at the first Battle of the Marne. Le 2e escadron du 18e Hussards, sous le commandement du major Levenson, prit position près de cette ligne d'arbres, et mit pied à terre parmi les meules de ,blé. Il fut immédiatement chargé par un escadron allemand en ordre parfait, avançant en 1igne et botte à botte. Le 18e Hussards accueillit par un feu bien dirigé l'escadron ennemi, qui fut presque anéanti. Quelques cavaliers seulement franchirent la ligne de feu, et furent tués par les hommes qui tenaient les chevaux. On compta 32 Allemands tués ou blessés sur le front de l'escadron, et sur les 60 Ou 70 qui chargèrent, il n'en réchappa guère plus d'une douzaine. World War II

Levenson, Arthur J. Lieutenant Colonel, U. S. Army, WWII Code Breaker - National Security Agency Official With the start of World War ll, the Army called Mr. Levenson to active duty from the Enlisted Reserve Corps. He would regale friends with stories of his adventures as a security guard at Arlington Hall Station, then Headquarters of the Signal Intelligence Service. He was approved for Signal Corps OCS at Fort Monmouth, and following graduation, was selected by Major William Bundy to be a member of the highly qualified group that joined the British wartime code breaking organization at Bletchley Park in Britain. There he worked against both the ENIGMA and TUNNY German cipher machines in the famous Hut 6. He became fast friends with many of the principal British cryptanalysts such as Alan Turing and Hugh Alexander with whom he shared a lifelong love of chess.

Levenson, Robert Martin US ARMY, 319th Infantry Regiment (Anti Tank Co.), wounded in action January 13, 1945, served in WWII.

Levenson, Harold, Staff Sergeant, Army Air Force: One of the few white enlisted men assigned to Tuskegee was T/SGT Frank Levenson. He was a graduate of Boston University School of Finance and at Tuskegee served as technical assitant in the finance office

Levenson, Herbert H. 2Lt. MISSION 277 -- March 24, 1945. Furstenau/Vechtel, Germany. The following combat crew is Missing in Action. 533rd Squadron 2nd Lt. Levenson, Herbert H. 0-783475 B The following official report was sent to the Chaplain's office from Headquarters: 2nd Lt. Herbert H. Levenson was flying as Bombardier on Lt. Jankowiak's crew while on a mission to Furstenau/Vechtel, Germany. A/C was last observed after being hit by flak in #4 engine knocking prop off, and the cowling. A/C then went into a glide to the right, under control but on fire. Leveled off and was under control for about 5 minutes and was then observed to spiral down and crash on Quackenbruck A/F, Germany. Still MIA.

Levenson, Abe Private, U.S. Army Company G, 167th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, A.E.F. Date of Action: July 27, 1918 Citation: The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Abe Levenson, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Croix Rouge Farm, northeast of Chateau-Thierry, France, July 27, 1918. When his company was in action near Hill 212, Private Levenson was posted as lookout while his company was entrenching. He observed the enemy bringing forward machine guns through the wheat fields to place them in position. Waiting until they were within close range, he exposed himself to heavy machine-gun and artillery fire and succeeded in killing or disabling the crew of two machine guns, thus saving his company from heavy casualties.
