Here in Britain, we sometimes use "flag day" to mean a charity collection - as in "The RSPCA are having a flag day today" - though the phrase is not as common now as it used to be, since it's now uncommon for donors to be given flags to stick in their buttonholes; stickers or the like are now much more widely seen. Is the list of Flag Days to be found elsewhere on wikipedia? I stumbled on this page on a random tour, and wondered when flag days for countries other than my own were celebrated. I can't seem to find a comprehensive list anywhere else. In Japan, "flag day" is a euphemism for the date when a woman's monthly menstruation period begins. This is because the Japanese flag, a red dot on a white background, resembles a bloodied sanitary napkin. According to Womansword: What Japanese Words Say about Women, by Kittredge Cherry (ISBN 4-7700-1655-7), the expression hi no maru 日の丸 (which means "rising sun", and can be used as a name of the Japanese flag) is "an outmoded but colorful slang term" for menstruation... While there are many "flag days" in each country, the appropriate ones to include on this page seem to be the ones that celebrate the flag itself. Accordingly, I have repaired the entry for Denmark to list the well-known "Valdemarsdag" rather than the obscure (and new) day for service in foreign military interventions. Could someone add to the article the flag day of Kosovo, November 28th? It does in fact coincide with the flag day of neighbouring Albania, but has been celebrated since the 16th century to commemorate a victory over the Ottoman empire.
