In researching the etymology of 'Brixton' for the history section, I've come across some rather conflicting claims. Brixton is recorded as Brictricestone in the Domesay Book, and one source says the name derives from the Norman 'de Britrickstone' family. That would make sense, since William White's gazetteer describes the manor of "Britricheston" being "held by a family of its own name".

But other sources give a more straightforward etymology: Brictric's tun, or the tun (Old English for 'town') of Brictric, a powerful English thegn who possessed significant landholdings in the West Country.
