Wait a sec

It is claimed that this surname derives from Ben Hassan, however the page of Jacopo Bassano claims he took his name from Bassano del Grappa near Venice. If this is correct I imagine this is the case with all the other Bassanos who originate from the Venice area and the Ben Hassan claim is false. Also to call the name a Jewish surname must also be misleading as surely some non Jewish people also took their surnames from these places in Italy? OK, according to an expert on the Bassanos, Alessio Ruffatti, the family were not actually not Jewish at all! (Ruffatti, Alessio. "Italian Musicians at the Tudor Court--Were They Really Jews?"
