This is to support Barzan Hassan Muhamad Amin in his heartfelt wish to attend the Hearst Journalism Fellowship Program.Barzan was one of my best students, when I was leading the Independent Media Centre in Kurdistan (IMCK). The centre was set op 2008 in the Kurdish city of Sulaymaniya to help elevate the level of Iraqi journalism in order for it to play a role in the development of a healthy democracy. We trained journalists from all over Iraq, but also politicians and police on how to better deal with the media. We were financed by Press Now, (now: Free Press Unlimited) and many other foreign NGOs.As part of our program, we set up a post-graduate course, Media bo Khalk (Media for People), helping Iraqi graduates from whatever background to enrol in journalism. The course, which took a (school)year, ran three times and was supported by the American Consulate in Erbil and the Kurdistan Prime Minister (Nechirvan Barzani at the time). In 2010, Barzan finished the post-graduate course with flying colours. He was then also one of the first to find a steady job in journalism in Kurdistan after this.Barzan remained on my list of ‘successful students’ whose development I kept following, and I feel proud to see how he ended up reporting from Brussels for Kurdish media outlets. I sincerely think that your program could help him take the next successful step on the ladder of his career.
