Rename to "Gyakuten Kenji 2"
So I just noticed that this article is named after its unofficial name ("Ace Attorney Investigations 2"), even though the game was never released outside of Japan, which means its official name is "Gyakuten Kenji 2". I do not get why Investigations 2 gets a special pass, while both "Dai Gyakuten Saiban" game pages are named after their official Japanese names instead of their unofficial names ("The Great Ace Attorney 1 & 2"). My solution to this would be either that we change this article's name to "Gyakuten Kenji 2" (since it's the official name), or that we change both "Dai Gyakuten Saiban" game pages so that they're instead called by their unofficial names, them being "The Great Ace Attorney 1 and 2".--173.178.227.177 (talk) 05:51, 9 December 2019 (UTC)
- Basically, we use what an article subject is mostly commonly called in English-language sources writing about it (see WP:COMMONNAME), which in this case is Ace Attorney Investigations 2 - this is also why the first Mother game is at Mother (video game) rather than at EarthBound Beginnings. I do not know which name is most common for Dai Gyakuten Saiban, but if the most common name for it indeed is The Great Ace Attorney, then that article should be moved, yes.--Alexandra IDVtalk 06:47, 9 December 2019 (UTC)
- I do think it's a bit weird to not name articles with their official names personally, especially with that Earthbound Beginnings example you said. I know it is more often referred to as "Mother (video game)", but the official English name is EarthBound Beginnings... I know the rule of common names exist, but it just logically makes sense to call a game by its official English name instead of a fan name or a Japanese name... Anyways let's go back on topic, about Ace Attorney, I know that there is a fan-made patch of the game out there that calls it "The Great Ace Attorney: The Adventures of Ryuunosuke Naruhodou" and is planning on doing an English patch of the second one, called "The Great Ace Attorney 2: The Resolve of Ryuunosuke Naruhodou". I don't know if they are well-known or not, but if they are, then you could always change the names for DGS 1 & 2 to "The Great Ace Attorney 1 & 2". I think Wikipedia is weird for even having this common name rule tbh, since in my opinion, official names should be the priority, but I'm not here to argue over Wikipedia rules :p --173.178.227.177 (talk) 23:59, 10 December 2019 (UTC)
I agree that we should change the title to Gyakuten Kenji 2. English sources when referring to the game, call it Ace Attorney Investigations 2 because that's what it is, but it was never officially named so. There isn't an English version of the game (unless you count the fan translation), but officially it's Gyakuten Kenji 2. Jamie64326 (talk) 16:33, 16 May 2020 (UTC)
