I need some help

Hi! I made a page a while ago, Semyon Der-Arguchintsev. I was recently updating it a while ago and noticed it doesn't have a points/goals chart. I was looking on some pages to see how to make them and it looked like NASA to me. Can someone make one, as I feel it would mighty improve the page. Nolanisntfunny (talk) 18:33, 4 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello, Nolanisntfunny, and welcome to the Teahouse. I'm afraid that, in worrying about a points/goals chart, you are like somebody worrying about painting a house when the house is about to fall down because it has no foundations. The article at the moment does nothing to establish that Der-Arguchintsev meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability. I don't know enough Ice hockey to know whether he meets any of the specific criteria on that page I linked to; but even if he does, the references need to be improved; and if he doesn't the references to nothing to establish his notability by the general criteria. The first reference is just a summary of data, the other two don't even mention him. We need places where independent people have written text about him, and been published in reliable sources. Please see CITE. --ColinFine (talk) 19:11, 4 November 2020 (UTC)

Semyon has played in the KHL, the top league in Russia, which is a fully professional men’s league, which means he is in fact notable. Just sayin. I also will try to find some more information on him. Nolanisntfunny (talk) 15:11, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

New users are not allowed to create article?

I recently read and created an article about a youngest entrepreneur who rose to fame in such a little age and represented India on various international platform but the article got moved to draft by a user and they asking me to submit a draft. Wanna ask if new users are not allowed to create pages?--ShaiksKings (talk) 15:32, 5 November 2020 (UTC) ShaiksKings (talk) 15:32, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

ShaiksKings, New users are required to make a draft and get it approved. Please read the policy on paid editing, as you appear to have a conflict of interest. —moonythedwarf (Braden N.) 15:47, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
Moonythedwarf No, i have not been paid for this. I think the guy who moved it to draft should have at least confirmed. Anyways, I am gonna be submitting a draft if i can not create pages directly.

Getting a page published help!

Hi, I've been trying to get a page approved. It got rejected once and I resubmitted it 26 days ago but it's still in the waiting queue I hope? I've never edited on Wikipedia before so don't know if I've done things correctly, just wanted confirmation it was going to be reviewed by an editor at some stage. This is the page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Linda_Merrick 146.199.96.253 (talk) 12:37, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

I've submitted your draft for review. All there is now to do is be patient. Right now, there are currently over 3,000 pages waiting to be reviewed and published, and they aren't taken in any order. It can take sometime between only a couple of days to 3 months. While you wait, why not edit other pages that spark your interests? Le Panini (Talk tome?) 12:41, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
Also, why not create an account? It's hard to get credit for what you do by being an IP user. You'll get your own personal user page (click on my username for an example) and talk page, where you can be contacted. Le Panini (Talk tome?) 12:44, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
Cleaned Draft:Linda Merrick up a bit. Refs need to be put in proper format, and her education content needs references. David notMD (talk) 16:18, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello

Hello can you please make a create button on the top right cornor thanks it is hard to get because sometimes it dissapears. NoirVozeeWolf (talk) 16:03, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

I added a template for your draft. When you're ready to submit it, hit the blue button. Le Panini Talk 16:43, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

Deleting a redirect

Georgina Rodriguez is presently a spanish model, who has received sufficient media coverage since her relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo. But her Wikipedia page redirects into Ronaldo's. I feel that she deserves a Wikipedia article of her own. Could anyone please remove the redirect, so that I could create the article --Atlantis77177 (talk) 16:54, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

@Atlantis77177: Georgina Rodriguez does not exist currently, and does not to appear to exist. Even if it were, it would not be a problem for you because the reviewer of Draft:Georgina Rodriguez would take care of that during accepting. Note that the draft is currrently not ready for getting promoted to an article, see for example WP:BLP. Victor Schmidt (talk) 17:10, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
@Atlantis77177 and Victor Schmidt: Georgina Rodríguez (with the accented í) redirects to Cristiano Ronaldo#Personal life, but if the draft is accepted, then at that time, it can be changed or overridden. Joseph2302 (talk) 17:14, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

Babel boxes

How do I put babel boxes on my user page? Also, what are gadgets and which ones could I add to my account? Whycobblehere? (talk) 17:52, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello, Whycobblehere?, and welcome to the Teahouse. Babel boxes are one kind of Userbox: see Userboxes. You can see what gadgets are available, and enable them from "Preferences" at the top of the page. --ColinFine (talk) 18:18, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

Draft assistance requested

Dear Friends, hope you guys are well. I am working on a draft https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Janith_Wickramage i have made the requested edits to it (references citations) Im new to wikipedia

Could anyone be kind enough to go through my draft and see if it needs improving or if its not up to Wiki standard

Thank You,

Best of health Wtlipnikki (talk) 18:58, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

@Wtlipnikki: I started trying to clean it up for you, but there are no sources that suggest this is a notable actor. He needs to have been in multiple notable roles, rather than as supporting cast member. And there's no biographical coverage of him, only passing mentions. He won't pass WP:NACTOR or WP:GNG in general. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 19:11, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

Help with a new article for submission - citations? Anything else?

Hi, I am hoping to get my first article ever approved for inclusion on Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:M._Jenea_Sanchez It was rejected once, and I cannot tell if it was just because of citations. I revised the text to include a citation for almost every sentence, but I don't know if that's enough!

If someone could take a look and advise before I risk getting rejected again, that would be wonderful. Thanks for your help and guidance!

PS: I was more active on Wikipedia when I was in graduate school the first time (over 10 years ago), and now am active (to a degree) again but have changed areas of specialization. I am getting a master's in art history with a focus on women activism and print history. Thanks! BFDhD (talk) 19:45, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

@BFDhD: - I reviewed the article and the sourcing is insufficient to demonstrate notability for Wikipedia purposes. You need more media profiles, not just directory listings. The Catapult piece is good, but there needs to be more. See WP:NARTIST or WP:GNG. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 20:27, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

Bloomington, WI; non-notable, and a possible AfD

Hi everyone, I came across this page: Bloomington, Wisconsin and discovered the section about notable people has been removed several times by several IP users, and reverted by multiple users in an effort to restore the page. Possible edit war. That particular section has only one notable person, Christy Oates; it has a source, but it is not reliable and it leads to Oates' Smithsonian profile page. The problem is that the "notable person" does not appear to be notable anyway, but actually has a wiki article. The article appears to only have primary sources, not at all reliable, and one interview. It would seem that she's not notable enough to be included in the Bloomington, WI article, and the Oates article may be a good candidate for AfD. What do you suggest? Coryphantha Talk 03:44, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello Coryphantha. If a person has a Wikipedia biography, then they are presumed to be notable, and therefore eligible to be included in lists of notable people. Of course, if consensus is to delete the article, then that presumption no longer exists. So, if you truly believe that she is not notable, you can nominate the article for AfD. But I want to point out that the article has 11 references, most of which appear to be solid, and that the Smithsonian has at least two of her works in its collections. My guess is that the article would probably be kept in an AfD debate, but that is just my opinion as one experienced editor. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 05:02, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
Cullen328 Okay, thank you. I wasn't sure about the sources, much appreciated. Coryphantha Talk 23:04, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

Is it possible and acceptable to replace an existing article?

Is it possible and acceptable to replace an existing article with one written about the same person (deceased and distinguished poet, in this case) which is far more extensive? For example, the replacement will includes full biography of that poet, full list of his publications, full list of awards he received, references, links, Hyperlinks etc. - all are missing in the existing article?

If so - how best to carry out such replacement?

Your advice will be appreciated Merchav1 (talk) 19:26, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

@Merchav1: If the existing article is a minimal stub with only a sentence or two, it might be possible – otherwise, it would almost certainly be inappropriate to do so. If you are editing on the person's behalf, as indicated by your previous question, you should not make any edits to the article, but instead use the article talk page to suggest edits. I'll post some information on your user talk page about what you should think about if you have a conflict of interest, and what you are required to do if you receive any payment for your edits. Regards, --bonadea contributions talk 19:39, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
Hello, Merchav1. Unless that "full biography" has been written by somebody unconnected with the subject, and is entirely based on published works by people who have no connection with the subject, and have not been prompted or fed information by or on behalf of the subject, don't even think about it. Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. --ColinFine (talk) 22:34, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
No hyperlinks in body of article. Model after existing articles about poets. Select list of publications and awards preferred, this is not a regurgitation of his CV. And stop being coy - what is the name of the existing article? David notMD (talk) 23:04, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

Help to install an edit of an English entry of Wikipedia

Can you recommend a person who will be sent an edit (7 pages long) in English of an existing Wikipedia entry (of one page) for a renowned poet from Israel? All text, including the poet's photograph, is ready. Fees will be paid. Merchav1 (talk) 11:36, 4 November 2020 (UTC)

Merchav1 Paid editing services are not offered or recommended on Wikipedia. If you want to pay someone to edit for you, you will need to find them on your own. When you do, they will need to make the required paid editing declaration and state that you are paying them. 331dot (talk) 11:51, 4 November 2020 (UTC)
@Merchav1: I'd second what 331dot said above, and add that paying anyone for creating ('installing') an article in Wikipedia doesn't guarantee anything you could expect from any paid service. Among others,
 • it will not prevent any future modification of the provided contents, either expanding or shrinking, improving or spoiling it (because Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia, which can be edited by anyone – see Wikipedia:Editing policy);
 • it will not provide you any control over reusing the contents outside Wikipedia (as Wikipedia is free also in that its contents is available to everybody – see Wikipedia:Reusing Wikipedia content);
 • it will not release you (and a person paid by you) from
 • it will not prevent deleting the contents, whole or in part, if it appears to violate some Wikipedia policies not mentioned above (see the frame at the bottom of Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines, part 'Content').
So, generally: yes, you can pay someone to create the article here. If you do, however, remember you will pay just for a technical act of transferring data from your computer to Wikipedia system (and, possibly, some editing according to Wikipedia guidelines on article structure, layout, linking etc.).
You will not buy any kind of 'security' of the article to be created. --CiaPan (talk) 13:03, 4 November 2020 (UTC)
Lastly, is the photographer going to add the photograph to Wikipedia Commons, and in doing so, renounce all copyrights? The photographed poet does not hold the copyright to the photograph. David notMD (talk) 14:24, 4 November 2020 (UTC)
David notMD, when uploading photographs they took to Wikimedia Commons, photographers may if they wish renounce all rights to these. But doing so isn't required. Far more frequently, photographers attach a particular kind of copyleft license to what they upload. What's involved here needs to be clearly understood; it's explained in "Licensing". -- Hoary (talk) 23:04, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, I overstepped my knowledge there. David notMD (talk) 23:08, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

This Wikipedia page was posted about me by another person. The reviewer declined the submission and posted a list of items that need to be addressed. As I am most familiar with the content is is appropriate for me to edit my own profile page? Or should I leave that to other to do? Aranthama (talk) 11:08, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

Aranthama Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. The page you refer to is a draft; it is less problematic for an article subject to edit a draft about themselves, but it is still discouraged per the autobiography policy. If you meet the criteria for a Wikipedia article, it is best to let independent editors write it. If there are changes you would like to make to the draft, you may do so as long as they are well sourced to independent reliable sources. If the draft is accepted and formally placed in the encyclopedia, you should avoid directly editing it in most cases, but you may make formal edit requests.
I might suggest that you read about a Wikipedia article is not necessarily a good thing for any person. 331dot (talk) 11:26, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
Hi, Jerry, thanks for taking the time to ask about the propriety of how to proceed. If you have concerns about the content, you can note them at the associated meta-page Draft talk:Jerry B. Brown. The talk page acts as a visible record of the content-development process: any interested reader can flip from the article to its talk page and see that you raised issues which were or weren't subsequently addressed. If the article gets promoted from draft to main space, the talk page will move with it. (However, if the article is deleted then the talk page is also deleted.) If you do decide to edit the draft directly, then for transparency, leave a note on Talk disclosing that you have done so (your edits are recorded in the page history, but the fact that you are the subject is not obvious there). Normally you would let others make the changes if they are still active on the article, but Drafts can be deleted after 6 months of inactivity. I've added a note there for the record, pointing back to this discussion. Pelagicmessages ) – (07:17 Fri 06, AEST) 21:17, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
Arantham I'm the reviewer who left comments. In this particular instance, the article is so unsatisfactory that it will need considerable rewriting in any case. Beyond the technical errors, the most serious problem is that it's advocacy for the subject's views. But I'm a little puzzled by the authorship. The author is "Lauren at World Business Academy", who says she is writing it for payment by the Academy. The article says you are a director and fellow of that academy, and the website of the academy lists you both as a Fellow and as a Member of the Board.

In this unusual situation--(I cannot recall anything similar in my 14 years here), the content the subjectmight write is not substantially more coi than what is already in place, so, Aranthema, please edit the page as you see fit. When ready, let me know on my talk page, and I will look at it. There is no guarantee I, or any other reviewer, will accept it, and I remind you, that even it is accepted, anyone may challenge the article at AfD, and the consensus of the community decides. You've been given different advice above; you do have the right to edit the page directly in any case, even according to those who advise you not to. This is Wikipedia , and the basic policy here is WP:IAR. DGG ( talk ) 01:34, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Submitting an draft for review

Hi everyone, I have recently submitted an article for review. At the bottom it says I should move it into the "draft space" but when I tried to get more clarity I read somewhere that an experienced reviewer will do this for me?

Any help greatly appreciated. Apologies if this question has come up a million times before Caroly1970 (talk) 15:27, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello Caroly1970, and welcome to the Teahouse! As it says in the template at the bottom of Draft:Charles Daniel Lane, "Review waiting, please be patient." The move to draft have been done by someone else. So that's what's going on. You may also want to take a look where it says "Improving your odds of a speedy review". However.
Your draft lacks inline citations. A rule of thumb for a WP:BLP is "if you can't cite it, don't add it" and that goes double for stuff like "Achievements". WP:NACADEMIC may apply, but it seems like most of your refs are his own publications, not the ones demanded at WP:BASIC. Language like "Leaving school at 16, but nonetheless at the zenith, in terms of his intellect," reads like WP:PUFFERY.
So all in all, your draft needs more work. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 16:06, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

Thank you so much for your reply. I will try and make the adjustments you mentioned - I never realised what a complicated process this was so I applaud you for understanding it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Caroly1970 (talkcontribs) 17:05, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

Caroly1970, I've made some improvements to the draft, including some recommended above by other editors. You will need to remove all the citations of his own papers, or maybe keep a few of them, but listed as "publications" rather than cited. You have a lot of information about his life and work – you will need to cite published sources for all this information. This last is always the most difficult part of getting an article accepted here. Maproom (talk) 18:16, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
Since Lane is highly notable, and since the article would need major improvements as correctly outlined above, as a frequent reviewer of articles in this field, I decided it would be simpler if I improved and accepted it--as I sometimes do for people in the field. (I wish I were able to do this more often). There are still some points indicated where citations are needed and might not be readily available. DGG ( talk ) 02:14, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Page for artist

How can I create a page for an artist and not have it shut down? Dzmpa (talk) 14:05, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

Dzmpa, Wikipedia does not have "pages for" people, it has neutrally written articles about people. Creating a new article is difficult. The most difficult part is to establish that the subject is notable, by citing several reliable independent published sources with in-depth discussion of the subject. Maproom (talk) 14:17, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
Dzmpa Please read: WP:What Wikipedia Is Not first. Then study the policies on WP:Notability, with a special attention to WP:BIO, WP:BLP and WP:ARTIST. Next learn how Wikipedia requires WP:Verifiability. Then see how we need care about our WP:Neutral Point Of View and WP:TONE. Finally please visit WP:Your First Article and take the Wikipedia:Adventure. Then you'll be ready to start thinking about creating a new article.
Yes, this is not a joke. Creating a proper article from scratch is one of the most difficult tasks on Wikipedia. I am really wishing you success, but I honestly warn you it's close to impossible for a beginner. --CiaPan (talk) 16:15, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
therefore, Dzmpa , the positive advice which is most appropriate, is for you to start reading some parts of the pages indicated abovve, and improve existing articles in your field. The place to start is finding and adding additional references. DGG ( talk ) 02:16, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

change font size for editing

I'd like to increase the font size when editing. I tried to follow the instructions at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Editing/Projects/Font_size_in_the_editing_window#Choose_your_own_font_size, creating https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Karlberry/common.css (but with a larger number). I tried to bypass the browser cache (reload, log out/log in, restart browser). But the css has no apparent effect. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

Reference name

I want to expand and reference an article Mace (spray), and I have a question about the naming of a ref (citation). The ref name is ":0"; is this some convention I don't know? I would like more useful reference names, like an abbreviation of the source, author, or type of article, for examples. I looked at other articles and these seem common. I searched for something "WP:" to explain this, but was unable to find an explanation.

I can read the answer here. Thank you to anyone who can explain this.Matternotdissent (talk) 13:20, 4 November 2020

It's a convention that I don't understand either. (I presume that it's the result of some semi-automated module.) I think it's rather horrible and never use it. If I'm working on an article that uses it, and if it annoys me, I change it. Use whatever names you want, but be sure to preview before saving, in order to check that nothing has gone wrong. -- Hoary (talk) 13:28, 4 November 2020 (UTC)
I doubt it's a convention. I suspect it was chosen by a bot that was tidying up the referencing. If you were to replace it, consistently throughout the article, by a more informative name, that would be helpful. Maproom (talk) 13:31, 4 November 2020 (UTC)
@Matternotdissent and Hoary: It's one of the referencing help tools or bots that sets the reference names to things like :0, :1,:2, if there are duplicate references. I would recommend using something much clearer i.e. calling the ref Wired, as that's the name of source being used. Joseph2302 (talk) 13:34, 4 November 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for the answers and insights. I'm changing it! I'll be careful, and I am trying to use previews. Yes, "Wired" is easy and also makes it obvious for other editors. I prefer author names, but I should think about subsequent editors. Matternotdissent (talk) 13:42, 4 November 2020 (UTC)
Author names are fine too, anything is easier than :0. Joseph2302 (talk) 14:16, 4 November 2020 (UTC)
For science journal references I use first author's last name and year (because said author may have published several journal articles on the same topic). P.S. The quotation marks are not required. David notMD (talk) 14:28, 4 November 2020 (UTC)
For science journals I plan to use NameYear convention. Thanks for the info on quotation marks as Wikipedia pages that explain templates are useless. I like the quote marks, though, because I edit on my cell phone, and they're visually easy to spot.Matternotdissent (talk) 15:08, 4 November 2020 (UTC)
The quote marks are required if the name contains spaces or punctuation, I think, but not if it's a single "word". --ColinFine (talk) 16:09, 4 November 2020 (UTC)
Correctness is cumulative. David notMD (talk) 00:11, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
@David notMD: There was, at one point, a bug that name="Foo" was interpreted as different from name=Foo under some circumstances. I don't recall the details or whether it was fixed. I believe it is recommended to always quote HTML attribute values. It's certainly more future-proof (i.e. protects against someone changing the value to something with a space in it and forgetting to add the quotes. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 03:54, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Other barnstars

Hello, I have a question about the wikilove extension. I see people delivering barnstars, and some of them seem odd, because they are not accessible in the WikiLove menu, (eg: COVID-19 barnstar), how do you obtain them? --a gd fan (talk) 14:15 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Barnstars shows barnstars that can be given to other editors. It's bad form to award yourself barnstars, or to dole out lots of barnstars to other editors for their modest or less than modest contributions. David notMD (talk) 14:32, 4 November 2020 (UTC)
Ok, I wasn't going to do anything, I was only confused, and I also don't feel important if I award myself. --a gd fan (talk) 14:45, 4 November 2020 (UTC)

Let me ask the question from a reviewer's standpoint, in three parts. First, there is a pull-down menu of barnstars. Where is a gallery of additional barnstars, and can they be awarded by anyone if they know where the gallery is? Second, how can one request that another barnstar be added to the pulldown? Third, how are barnstars designed? Is it done with a .ico editor, or how? Robert McClenon (talk) 17:05, 4 November 2020 (UTC)

Courtesy: J. Jaye Gold. You can comment at the Deletion discussion and you can also attempt to address the criticism by improving the article. Clock is ticking. David notMD (talk) 22:41, 31 October 2020 (UTC)

Hello, Onganymede. You can contribute to the discussion at WP:Articles for deletion/J. Jaye Gold. But given, as the comments say, that it is a promotional piece sourced only to his work, there is little hope of saving it. If you want Wikipedia to have an article about Gold, you should let it be deleted, and start again with a draft, remembering that Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, but only in what people wholly unconnected with the subject, and not prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about them in reliable sources. I suggest that you start by reading your first article carefully; and, if you have any connection with Gold yourself, also reading conflict of interest/ --ColinFine (talk) 22:45, 31 October 2020 (UTC)

Apologies, how can I reply to either of you who have responded to me here?Onganymede (talk) 22:59, 31 October 2020 (UTC) Onganymede (talk) 22:59, 31 October 2020 (UTC)

Hello again Onganymede. I have moved your reply to the correct section: you put it on the end of the page, which meant it was appended to a different question. So that's the answer: edit the specific section of the page. You can ping another user by going username, so I went Onganymede. --ColinFine (talk) 23:08, 31 October 2020 (UTC)

Thanks ColinFine for the navigation tip and fixing my placement! I've cut out everything I once held dear [kidding], addressed COI on my talk page, and added new refs. Would you mind taking another quick look and offering direction? Onganymede (talk) 05:06, 2 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello Onganymede. Glancing at your new sources, I notice that nine of them are blog posts (which are not "reliable sources") and one is an interview with Gold (which is not independent of him). —teb728 t c 07:08, 2 November 2020 (UTC) BTW the reason you were not able to save links to the Thrive Global blog posts is that the website is on the spam blacklist. —teb728 t c 10:06, 2 November 2020 (UTC)

Thanks ColinFine for looking again. A few questions, if you would... 1] You are saying that Arianna Huffington's publication Thrive Global, which Wikipedia describes as "an American company that provides behavior change technology etc.," is an unacceptable source? Is this accurate? Can this be changed? Can I prove these articles are not spam? 2] Re: the NPR "interview,"I am referencing the interviewer's comments, not Gold's... The interviewer herself is a secondary source, no? She appears to already have known the info about Gold that I am referencing. It was not revealed in/by the interview. Is this incorrect reasoning? I have found several other interviews by people who know him and say things about him. This is all inadmissible? Are you saying my sources must be tertiary? 3] re: FortWorth news link, I don't have the archived link yet. I have seen a xeroxed clipping, but may not be able to get online version. What to do? Delete? 4] Books, unfortunately, it seems to me, are on their way out of our lives. How will one reference secondary sources if not partially via online media...interviews, youtube videos, and so forth? 5] I've spent hours and hours comparing other BLPs... I see that the rules are often stretched. Just came across one with 11 of the 15 reference from subject's web page, and 2 identical from encyclopedia.com. If somebody writes Gold into an online encyclopedia tomorrow, can I use that as a source? You understand my frustration no doubt. Should I take out Bio, or nonprofit, or teaching sections?... just leave books? I appreciate your time and attention. Can/Should I paste to others on the Afd page? Is that a place I can ask about my issues, or just for the administrators/voters? Onganymede (talk) 10:07, 4 November 2020 (UTC)

pinging teb728, whose comments you are responding to. --ColinFine (talk) 12:03, 4 November 2020 (UTC)

ColinFine Thanks! I see/understand now that the comments were from teb728! Can you address any of my other questions? The interviewer's prior knowledge as ref, the off line news archives, would YOU allow the Thrive articles? Onganymede (talk) 20:57, 4 November 2020 (UTC) teb728 Hi, appreciate the explanation of the Thrive linking problem. The Wiki article about Thrive says all good things..no indication that it is not trustworthy. But Wiki blocks a Thrive article as spam? Seems anomalous, or am I missing some bigger picture? Am I to understand that I must delete any references I found there? Thank you Onganymede (talk) 20:57, 4 November 2020 (UTC) Hi again ColinFine, I have restructured, rewritten, new-sourced, and I believe addressed every issue that has been brought to my attention. Will you check it out? Onganymede (talk) 20:55, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

OK, Onganymede, think about it this way: What would make Gold significant enough to be the subject of an article in an encyclopedia? Most people are not that important. Does he meet any of the notability criteria for authors? If not does he meet the basic notability criteria? Blog posts by his students do not show notability: anybody can write a blog post. When I looked at your sources on 2 November, the only one that looked like a independent reliable source was the Los Angeles Times article, and that was pretty underwhelming: it says his book was not good but his book tour was entertaining. —teb728 t c 06:04, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Cars in Cuba

hello, is anybody working on an article about American cars manufactured in the 1960s at bar now a part of the Cuban culture and economy? "wesselm3" (talk) 06:29, 6 November 2020 (UTC)>

Hello "wesselm3". Take a look at Transport in Cuba, which has a section called Old American cars in Cuba. This is a fascinating and well-documented topic that deserves a well-written article. These are mostly 1950s era cars. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:42, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Connection with subject

How can I avoid a personal connection when I am providing a history of a Pirate Station on which I was the operator, it is defunct so there is no current connection or COI. As the operator I am the only person who can detail the history, others have made websites about the station but I was there throughout the life of the station so I have more knowledge about it and have collected the articles and technical information, therefore I have expert knowledge is there a way to avoid the draft being rejected, and if it is will I have to abandon the article? I note the other stations in the category Pirate Radio Stations in the UK list have little more than stubs, and many have broken links to defunct sites. Comments appreciated

Mark-King-SkyportRadio Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. We cannot accept personal knowledge as a source. Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources that can be verified say about article subjects. If no independent reliable sources have written about your station, it would not merit an article at this time. 331dot (talk) 01:56, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

331dot (talk) Thanks for the helpful comment, I have cited various sources including books, magazines and websites, are you saying I can only create the article with those and not use any personal knowledge Mark King (talk) 02:18, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Mark-King-SkyportRadio Yes; you can only use published reliable sources that can be verified to write a Wikipedia article. See Your First Article for more information. If you just want to tell the world about your personal knowledge, you should use social media or perhaps some other alternative outlet where doing that is permitted. 331dot (talk) 02:27, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

331dot (talk) thank you for help, I don't think I can write it using the reliable sources then, as I would still have the connection, I have published websites, where I have detailed the history, so if some unconnected historian or author were to use those and the books and magazines I've cited to create an article I guess that would be the answer. my article clearly won't be approved so I will save it for my reference and close the account, do you think it is even worth bothering to submit the draft or will I just be creating work for someone?Mark King (talk) 02:39, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Drafts are hard to find unless someone knows of their existence already. so writing a draft and leaving it for others would have a low probability of success. I don't know how much you have, but if you have at least three independent sources with significant coverage, you might have enough for a short article and that would be worth submitting through Articles for Creation.
Regarding closing accounts; there is no way to delete or close an account; if you no longer wish to use it, just abandon the account. Some people mark their accounts as "retired", but that's not required. If you would like to remove your name from your username, you can request a courtesy vanishing. 331dot (talk) 02:47, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Publishing Articles

Hi. I am new here. I want to publish articles. But it is impossible. Will it take time? I can only publish something on my page and also edit some posts that are not protected. But until now I cannot publish articles . I have heard that it can take a while . First we should be active and then Wikipedia gives this opportunity. Is it true? Early Miscarriage Awareness Day 9th November NOTABLE?

Hello, I am new and would like to write about Early Miscarriage Awareness Day which is on 9th November. Early gestation losses are still brushed under the carpet however cause huge emotional distress to those going through this heartache but in recent years since the awareness day launched I have seen gradual changes in the right direction which shows the awareness day is working! Before I started to write I was hoping if someone could offer advice if it is a “notable” subject as I didn’t want to start if it may get deleted x MrsMintyMum (talk) 08:42, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello, MrsMintyMum and welcome to the Teahouse. Thank you for asking your question. I appreciate this is a sensitive and emotional subject for many people (and I have some close person experience of the subject). However, this encyclopaedia is not a platform for promoting the myriad of 'XXX-Awareness Day' events that happen around the world, unless they have genuinely grown to become notable events in their own right, and have been written about in detail and in depth by many independent sources, especially mainstream media. Here, mere mentions are not sufficient - we know many things exist - Wikipedia just collates existing reliable sources that show a thing is 'Notable', and present that information back to its users. Simply Googling "Early Miscarriage Awareness Day" - and especially by going to the News section, I can see there simply aren't enough sources currently to make this a noteworthy article here in its own right. My genuine advice is that, as laudable as it may seem, going to that effort at this time would not produce the results you might have hoped for. Your previous edit is probably about as far on that topic as you ought to proceed. That said, if you find existing articles which are incomplete or poorly sourced, once you get a bit more practice, there is no reason why you should be able to added content and better references to them. I have left an introductory welcome for you on you talk page with some helpful links to get you started. I'm sorry I can't be more encouraging on this specific matter. Kind regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 10:51, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Help to making my business article fit Wikipedia

Hi all, I need some help to make this article better fit wikipedia purpose, I want to inform about what we do with this company and what is the purpose and some of the history of the company and at the same time respecting Wikipedia's objective.

This is the article: Draft:Vert_run

What's wrong and how can I improve it?

Thanks so much Moises.jleon (talk) 09:54, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Moises.jleon, read WP:COMPANY carefully. Do you see the (big) problem? If WP:COI applies, follow the guidance there. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:03, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
@Moises.jleon: Welcome to the Teahouse. I'm afraid it looks like you are simply trying to use Wikipedia as a means of WP:PROMOTION for your business. There are millions of businesses in the world - this encyclopaedia can only accept articles about Notable ones that independent sources have written about in detail and in depth. I have fixed the Conflict of Interest template on your userppage so that it functions properly, but I fear you have no chance of getting your business advertised here. As a business owner, you are actually receiving income from editing here, and so should not edit any article about your company directly. If and when it becomes notable by Wikipedia's criteria, another editor will surely want to pick up on it and write about it. Maybe is is simply WP:TOOSOON. Nick Moyes (talk) 10:29, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
@Nick Moyes:

Thanks for your reply, so I disagree with you on WP:TOOSOON and Notable ones... this is not advertising, it's an informative page article about a business, yes a small one but you don't need to be Nike to have an informative article about it... so Maybe it's simply the moment. There are thousands of business smaller than Vert, even in the encyclopedia so I don't get the argument.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Moises.jleon (talkcontribs)

Moises.jleon What you call "an informative page" is considered promotional on Wikipedia. You don't need to be soliciting customers or selling something. Wikipedia is not for merely providing information. This is an encyclopedia, and as an encyclopedia, articles (not mere "pages") must do more than merely tell about the subject. They must summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about (in this case) a company, showing how it meets the special Wikipedia definition of a notable company. Wikipedia has no interest in what a company wants to say about itself, only in what others completely unconnected with the company have chosen to say about it. Because of this, not every company merits a Wikipedia article, even within the same field. 331dot (talk) 10:51, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
I agree with the proposed Speedy deletion. Promotional. Plus, two of the 'refs' are to the company website, and a third confirms that Kristen is a photographer, but has no information about the company. David notMD (talk) 11:48, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Birth and age info

Hi - just wondering - is listing the birth date or age of the subject mandatory? Octopus69 (talk) 12:46, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Octopus69, absolutely not, and unless you can cite it to an acceptable source, see WP:DOB, don't (that's for WP:BLPs). Sometimes a good source gives you a "middleground", see for example Dede Wilson (baker). Or Osman I. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:00, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

All should be deleted. Because stuff exists contrary to Wikipedia good practices does not mean do more of it. David notMD (talk) 09:58, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
@Neerajberi: It is a common trick for a commercial website to write a short, encyclopaedic piece about a topic and then try to place a link to it to draw traffic to the sales side of its website. It is also a common mistake that other editors might think it's OK to do so. But it is not. If you would like to look through all 6,185,748 Wikipedia articles and let us know which ones have commercially-orientated links in them, we will gladly remove them all. But we can only remove the ones we become aware of. You have already been warned by one administrator not to add such links to articles here. This administrator is now repeating that advice. Nick Moyes (talk) 10:20, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

How do you change to the Visual editor?

I want to add things to Wikipedia's unusual articles. How do you change the editor to the visual editor? Eridian314 (talk) 15:07, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

@Eridian314: In general, I reccomend that you change your preferences. Two things in "Editing":
 • Uncheck the checkbox "Temporerely disable the visual editor while it is in beta"
 • Under "editing mode" make sure that the dropdown is set to "show me both tabs".
This will add a second edit link to the toolbar, next to the usual, which activates the visual editor. You can always switch from visual editor to source by using the pencil icon in the visual editor toolbar, or the other way round by clicking the same link you would click to start editing with the visual editor. @331dot: Thanks for that piece of info. I was actually contemplating whether to remove this curse word or not in this article I was skimming through. Sorry for bothering again

Sorry for bothering again, but I want to ask that are all these books considered trustworthy on Wikipedia:-

1.Rajput Clans: Nanda, Tribes and Clans of the Pothohar Plateau, Janjua Rajput, Khokhar, Tomara Dynasty, Kachwaha, Minhas, Bhati, Johiya, Mers [2]

2.Rajput Clans of Uttar Pradesh: Tomara Dynasty, Kachwaha, Chandela, Solanki, Paramara, Bhaduria, Rathore, Pundir, Sisodia, Sikarwar, Bundela [3]

3. Handbooks on Rajputs [4] Sumit banaphar (talk) 13:06, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

The third one might be, Sumit banaphar; but despite the cover date of 2006, it is a reprint of a book from 1899, and may not be reliable for c that reason. I would regard as suspect any book that says in the opening paragraph "the other a dark-complexioned race of lower type". This was no doubt acceptable in 1899, but today it is appalling racism, and casts all its contents into doubt. The other two both say, in their Google Books entry: "Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online", so citing them is the same as citing Wikipedia. See WP:CIRCULAR. --ColinFine (talk) 13:33, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
I think we can summarize ColinFine's informative and constructive comment as "No". If you, Sumit banaphar, would like to ask about the likely value of any other source for India, then the best place to do so is probably Wikipedia talk:Noticeboard for India-related topics. -- Hoary (talk) 13:38, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
On the third one, WP:RAJ may apply. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:39, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

@Gråbergs Gråa Sång:- But the third one is published in 1996 so how it is in WP:RAJ.

@Hoary:- I have no problem but can you help me to how to write a proper notice in Wikipedia talk:Noticeboard for India-related topics — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sumit banaphar (talkcontribs) 13:52, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

ColinFine has already explained that the third book was published in 1899 and is blatantly racist. That it was reprinted in 2006 is by the way. WP:RAJ applies. You can post a question to Wikipedia talk:Noticeboard for India-related topics in the same way that you post a question here -- but please, wherever you're thinking of posting a question, only post it if you intend to read and digest the responses. -- Hoary (talk) 13:58, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
That. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:59, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
Someohow I suspect that is never going to happen. Sumit is interested in just one thing - to prove that Banafar (his clan), and the two legendary heroes of Banafars (Udal of Mahoba and Alha), are pure-bred warrior-race, and has no mix of lowly Ahir race. Is entire presence on Wikipedia is dedicated to that endeavor. He also is interested in reading just one word in a book - "Banafar" - no matter what else is written in the sentence. Aditya() 07:07, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Aditya:-I agree what your saying that I'm here just to edit those three pages but I do not agree with when you say that I'm interested in just one word no matter what is written in it.

It is simple as that for ex:- when someone write your name incorrect so there is two options first you can correct yourself or second tell him kindly that it's incorrect please correct it.Sumit banaphar (talk) 18:26, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Question

How do I create a television show article?  GreenSuiteMan talk 17:42, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello, GreenSuiteMan, and welcome to the Teahouse. You create an encyclopaedia article about a TV show the same way as you create an encyclopaedia article about anything else:
If you're going to write an article about anyone or anything that is not you or something you are connected to, here are the steps you should follow:
1) Choose a topic whose notability is attested by discussions of it in several reliable independent sources.
2) Gather as many professionally-published mainstream academic or journalistic sources you can find. Google Books is a good resource for this. Also, while search engine results are not sources, they are where you can find sources. Just remember that they need to be professionally-published mainstream academic or journalistic sources.
3) Focus on just the ones that are not dependent upon or affiliated with the subject, but still specifically about the subject and providing in-depth coverage (not passing mentions). If you do not have at least three such sources, the subject is not yet notable and trying to write an article at this point will only fail.
4) Summarize those sources left after step 3, adding citations at the end of them. You'll want to do this in a program with little/no formatting, like Microsoft Notepad or Notepad++, and not in something like Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer. Make sure this summary is just bare statement of facts, phrased in a way that even someone who hates the subject can agree with.
5) Combine overlapping summaries where possible (without arriving at new statements that no individual source supports), repeating citations as needed.
6) Paraphrase the whole thing just to be extra sure you've avoided any copyright violations or plagiarism.
7) Use the Article wizard to post this draft and wait for approval.
8) Expand the article using sources you put aside in step 3 (but make sure they don't make up more than half the sources for the article, and make sure that affiliated sources don't make up more than half of that).

Doing something besides those steps typically results in the article not being approved, or even in its deletion.

If you are writing about yourself, or someone or something you are connected with (such as a friend, family member, or your business), the following steps are different:

0) If the subject really was notable, you wouldn't need to write the article. Remember that articles are owned by the Wikipedia community as a whole, not the article subject or the article author. If you do not want other people to write about you, then starting an article about yourself is a bad idea.
8a) If the article is accepted, never edit it again. Instead, make edit requests on the article's talk page.
8b) If the article is rejected, there will be a reason given. Read it carefully and closely. If there are links in the reason, open them and read those pages. --ColinFine (talk) 18:42, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
@GreenSuiteMan: who is "we"? The steps are not that far away from those for every other article, though I am not an expert at Wikipedia:NTELEVISION. Speedy deletion

Why do my pages keep getting a warning for speedy deletion? NonPopularPerson (talk) 06:23, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello NonPopularPerson. It is because you are not complying well enough with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Please read, study and follow them. Please also read Your first article and follow its excellent advice. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:32, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
NonPopularPerson. In particular, the two articles were speedily deleted because they did not indicate why the subject were significant enough to have encyclopedia articles, and your user page was deleted for being promotional. —teb728 t c 18:58, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Help with Sandbox

Good afternoon, Currently in my sandbox is a redirect to an article I created, Charles S. Fuchs. I would like to use the sandbox to work on creating a new article - can I delete the redirect that us currently there or will doing that change something with the existing article? Thank you for any help! Jcollinsycc (talk) 20:37, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Hey @User:Jcollinsycc, yes, if it is in your own userspace, you can remove the redirect. To do that, just blank all the text on the page and then write whatever you want. Hope this helps! Ghinga7 (talk) 21:06, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Honest Mistake in actresses in the movie Titanic Vs Avatar

Hello

Uhhhh ... Kate Winslet was not featured in James's Cameron's Avatar, she was featured in Titanic, but in the credit section in film section of James's Cameron, it is listed Kate Winslet was featured in Avatar -- KATE WINSLET WAS NOT IN AVATAR -- IT WAS ZOEY FROM STAR TREK -- the actress Zoey played one of the Avatars! 174.95.22.214 (talk) 22:57, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello IP editor. Thank you for spotting this probable error. Please would you repeat your concerns on the Talk Page of the relevant article, please? Editors with an interest in that subject will no doubt check and make corrections, as appropriate. As an aside, I did spot that Kate Winslet is appearing in the forthcoming Avatar2 (see here), so that might be where any error came from. Kind regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 23:29, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

HELP ME !!!

hello, I think one of user have aggression to me, he put GNG template to may articles, seriously all of articles, some of them he put PROD or AfD. What can I do or who can i say....i create referee articles, that user write that articles are not pass notability, but there are more more more articles that same as me, which he put PROD, Afd or GNG....please help me...i dont know what he want from me??? Almgerdeu (talk) 19:42, 3 November 2020 (UTC)

Well, based on the messages on your talkpage, I think they want you to not create articles unless they clearly meet WP:GNG/WP:BASIC. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 20:13, 3 November 2020 (UTC)
@Almgerdeu: The problem, as I see it, is that you do not have much understanding of our notability criteria and the sources that you need to find and to put into an article in orer to demonstrate a person is Notable enough for a page to remain in this encyclopaedia. See WP:SPORTBASIC for a bit of specific guidance on sport-people. OK, so you are clearly fascinated by football referees, and so are the main types of website you cite in your rapidly-created pages: worldreferee.com ; eu-football.info ; thecelticwiki.com. Unfortunately, they all seem to be insider summary pages, with nothing to suggest real notability, just the jobs they've done. I am not aware that WP:NSPORTS has a criterion for notability of referees taking part in major tournaments. There seems to be no citations in your hastily made pages to published books, biographies or national media outlets - that talks about their participation and contribution to major sporting events, such as they refereed in the 1996 World Cup, followed by lots of indepth coverage of them as a person. That's what notability means. So, if you're going to carry on in this way, you must be prepared for a lot more PRODS and AFDs on notability grounds. The way to avoid that is to slow down, and spend real, quality time finding sources about these seemingly non-notable people. If you can't, then maybe it's best not to waste everyone's time - including your own - trying. That, to me, seems to be the bottom line, and I would encourage Spiderone to continue assessing your well-meant contributions - and perhaps offer you a bit of guidance and instruction along the way. I hope both of you will proceed with care. Nick Moyes (talk) 21:51, 3 November 2020 (UTC).
@Almgerdeu: there is no aggression here. A number of users, not just me, have left messages on your talk page suggesting how articles could be improved. I have personally suggested that you try to use WP:DRAFT and WP:AFC to help you to understand what sort of articles are accepted and which ones are not. Unfortunately, not everyone is notable. I can tell that you have put a good chunk of time into a lot of these articles but, honestly, a lot of these people just do not meet WP:GNG. If a person cannot be sourced to anything more than World Referees or similar database websites then that person isn't notable. Me placing a GNG template on an article is not a personal attack but simply a reminder that the article makes no demonstration of how the subject is notable. I could go straight to PROD or AfD in almost all of these cases but I think it's important that you spend time trying to find sources that explore the referees in depth and, if they don't exist, then try to use self-control and not create the article. The only one that stands out to me as being hugely notable is Arturo Yamasaki. Honestly, the overwhelming majority of the others don't seem to have anything more than routine and passing mentions. Spiderone 22:01, 3 November 2020 (UTC)

Almgerdeu has created close to 100 stub-length articles on football referees. Many of these get Prod, then contested by Almgerdeu, then nominated to AfD, and then deleted. Is there a way to stop this insistence on creating articles which do not, and can not, meet Wikipedia's criteria for GNG? David notMD (talk) 04:04, 4 November 2020 (UTC)

Since Almgerdeu is clearly acting in good faith, I'm not sure. If it were deliberately disruptive behaviour, I would go down the route of ANI and suggesting a topic ban but I don't think that's appropriate in this particular circumstance. Spiderone 09:13, 4 November 2020 (UTC)
Additionally, they all seem to not be in written in a neutral point of view. The summaries are also all in past tense for some reason. Le Panini Talk 23:59, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Wikipedia images

I have an issue with wikipedia the website feels out of date and old to be precise - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SmashingPumpkins-SiameseDream.jpg - this image is from 2007 - i think it should be updated to a much bigger one and as i am not allowed to edit that page - i guess the right person at wikipedia needs to be notified of such an issue i'm sure in 2007 it was a bandwidth issue to have such a small image - but in 2020?

i have noticed this with a lot of images on wikipedia - but this one made me want to do this
so if you can tell your boss to get it sorted that would be swell
it's kind of embarrassing to see a major historical website have such poor image quality frankly 62.228.224.203 (talk) 14:05, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
@62.228.224.203: There is no "boss" here. Wikipedia articles are created, edited and updated by thousands of volunteer editors each day. If something is out of date, it probbably means that nobody came to update it yet or that there exist no reliable sources for a change. Victor Schmidt (talk) 14:22, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
The default image size is small for people reading Wikipedia on phones and other small screen devices. If you don't like the default image size, you can create an account and alter the image sizes that you see in "Preferences" "Appearance" - Arjayay (talk) 14:27, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
With respect to the specific image you are referring to, that is a copyright image, used under a claim of "fair-use" which means we cannot, legally, use a larger px size, as that would be a copyright violation - Arjayay (talk) 14:29, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
(edit conflict) When it's about images, there's an even bigger problem: copyright. Most images on the net, or published anywhere, are copyright in ways that Wikipedia cannot use them consistently with its policies. Because this limits the available images, there are certain exceptions whether images are used under "fair use": typically for logos, album and book covers, and posters. One of these conditions (3b in WP:NFCC) is that they should be small and low resolution copies where possible. So where appropriate an image could be replaced by a newer one; but replacing it by a larger or higher-resolution image would be contrary to Wikipedia's policies, and risk infringing somebody's copyright. Sorry. --ColinFine (talk) 14:35, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

Creating a new category

Hi. How does one create a new category? Please, just a simple, user-friendly, short "how to", as I'm not technically very well-versed. Thank you very much, Arminden (talk) 05:24, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

Arminden, there are multiple ways, however, I think the simplest way is to go to your URL and type "en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:" and after "Category:", type in the title of the category and click go. Alternatively, create a red-link by typing :Category: in a sandbox, and after ":Category:", type in the title of the category and publish. Click the red-link. Both will get you to a page, click "Create" and you can create a category. If you instead need help assembling a category, please let me know! Enjoy your stay at the teahouse! Heart (talk) 05:29, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
HeartGlow30797, thanks again! Your advice was as useful as it was prompt. The first option worked like clockwork. Have a great day, Arminden (talk) 06:02, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
Arminden I'm afraid HeartGlow30797 forgot one absolutely critical bit of advice. All categories must have at least one parent category. I have added to the category you created, Category:Architects in Ottoman Palestine the parent category Category:Architects of the Ottoman Empire. You will notice there that your new category is the only one that subdivides Ottoman architects by the various countries/regions of the empire, which is a somewhat lopsided situation. Given the fairly small number of Ottoman architect articles we currently have I'm not sure such subcategorisation is really needed. The question "how to create a category" only covers one part of the issue, one must also consider whether creating a particular category is really justified or neccessary. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 12:54, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
Dodger67, thank you. I've been editing for quite a while, just haven't bothered much about the more technical aspects. I think I can quite easily deal with the question of "whether creating a particular category is really justified/neccessary". Israel has the issue of a) being a very young country, with lots of buildings dating back to a time when the State of Israel didn't exist yet, and b) of being a very much contested piece of real estate, with many militant editors keeping an eager eye out on real or alleged errors of "political correctness", even where one would least expect it, so... I am completely baffled regarding how to leave a comment on an article

I am trying to comment on the articles https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth_Industrial_Revolution I go to the talk page and then click on edit and I go the bottom and i see a line saying "

The discussion above is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate "

I cannot work out where to make my comment. Basically my comment is to say that the article is mostly quite good except that the para above the heading "German strategy" is totally dire and needs rewriting completely.

Thanks for all help

JontheDuke (talk) 16:49, 7 November 2020 (UTC) JontheDuke (talk) 16:49, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

@JontheDuke: Just insert a blank line and type your section heading and comment beneath the last line of the talk page. That "The discussion above is closed" line refers to the move discussion that's currently the last section on the page. Deor (talk) 17:12, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
And, JontheDuke, thank you for wanting to help us improve it. Unfortunately, a comment like "XXX paragraph needs rewriting completely" probably won't have much effect, as we're all volunteers, and people work on what interests them. We have six million articles, and probably at least half a million of them have portions which need rewriting completely. If you have an idea for improving the paragraph, how about rewriting it yourself? Or if you're not confident to do that, suggest specific improvements to it on the talk page. --ColinFine (talk) 17:28, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

How do I write the reference and then publish? Rochellacooper (talk) 17:21, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello, Rochellacooper. (Just for your information: you managed to remove a lot of questions on this page with your first edit; so somebody reverted your edit, and I then added back your question. Nobody will hold this against you, but you should know that this happened). Looking at Draft:Lester J. Brown, I'm afraid you have made a number of classic beginner's mistakes. (Again, don't worry: we all make them). One is trying to plunge in and create a new article, possibly the most difficult task there is in editing Wikipedia, without having spent some time learning how Wikipedia works. The second is writing an article from what you know: Wikipedia isn't interested in what you know (or what I know, or what any random person on the internet knows). It is also not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves. It is only interested in what people who have no connection to the subject of the article, and have not been prompted or fed information by or on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish in WP:reliable sources. It follows that the first task in creating an article, before creating a draft or writing a word, is to find such reliably-published independent sources which discuss the subject at some length; because if you can't find such sources, then it is not going to be possible to write an acceptable article, and it is a waste of everyone's effort going any further. (The Wikipedia jargon for this is whether or not the subject is notable). Please have a look at your first article; and for references specifically, look at CITE. --ColinFine (talk) 17:40, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

Setting up a personal page

Could you please follow through and set this up as a personal page. Julie Dee Bell (talk) 18:11, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

Dr Julie Dee Bell Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. Wikipedia does not have "personal pages". It has articles, as this is an encyclopedia. Your user page is not article space, but a place for you to tell the Wikipedia community about yourself as a Wikipedia editor or user. It is not a place for you to tell anything and everything about yourself. People merit a Wikipedia article if they receive significant coverage in independent reliable sources that have chosen on their own to offer it, showing how they meet the special Wikipedia definition of a notable person, or in your case, a a notable academic. Autobiographical articles are strongly discouraged under the autobiography policy, as people naturally write favorably about themselves. Wikipedia is primarily interested in what others say about a person, not what the person says about themselves.
If you truly feel you can write about yourself in such a manner, you should first review Your First Article, then visit Articles for Creation to create and submit a draft article for review by an independent editor. 331dot (talk) 18:19, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

GOP

I made a change. See below.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Republican_Party_(United_States)

This is not correct " GOP losing the presidential election and lead to significant GOP losses in other races. In one of the largest upsets in American political history,[116][117][118][119] Trump went on to defeat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election."

How is it possible that the GOP lost the presidential election and then go on to defeat Hillary Clinton?

I wrote a correction "GOP won the presidential election and lead to significant GOP winning in other races. In one of the largest upsets in American political history,[116][117][118][119] Trump went on to defeat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election." which is factual.

Fred FRED BATT (talk) 22:21, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

FRED BATT Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. So you have your terminology crossed a bit- someone created a Wikipedia article about you, not an account. You created an account for yourself. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that has articles. The vast majority of articles on this encyclopedia about people were created without involvement of the subjects(Donald Trump did not write the article about him). You should avoid directly editing the article about yourself per the autobiography policy, but if there are changes that you feel are needed and you can source them to a reliable source, please make a formal edit request(click for instructions) on the article talk page. 331dot (talk) 23:04, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
@FRED BATT: Hello from Derby - home of Richard Felix - who, I believe, also used to do some presenting on the Most Haunted TV show - though I've never watched it myself. (In fact, he used to pop in from time to time at our city's Museum where I worked for many years.) Hey, I'm sorry to hear you've encountered an article about yourself which you think needs correcting. However, the advice given above by 331dot is spot on. Obviously, if there is wholly malicious and uncited content about Fred Batt, you, like anyone else is free to simply delete it (explained at this page). We take very seriously anyone messing around with biographies of living people, just as we do if someone should choose a username of a famous person and use it to edit under. Please don't take it personally, but I feel I am obliged to give a 'SOFTBLOCK to your account - purely to protect the real Fred Batt. OK, that's probably you - but please understand that we have no way of knowing that, except that the message that will be left on your talk page will explain how you can send an email from a valid account to prove that the account is, well, legitimately you. Once that's done, your account will be unfrozen for you. You will be in good company - I did precisely the same thing to BBC TV news journalist, Mark Easton, a year or two ago (see here). He then simply sent in an email from the BBC to what we call our 'OTRS' Team to prove that, well, he was who he claimed he was. He wanted to remove cited content which gave a very biased picture of himself - which was probably quite justified. But we had no way of knowing without first blocking (and then unblocking) his named account. I hope you won't mind this inconvenience, which (honestly) is designed to protect you, and certainly not to not frustrate you. (See the third paragraph at WP:REALNAME for further explanation). Kind regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 00:08, 8 November 2020 (UTC)

My first work

Hello, My first work was observed by Nathan2055. And it couldn't be accepted because of the language. I'd like to ask how can I transfer my article " Ծրագրակազմի Ճարտարագիտություն" from the English Wikipedia into Armenian Wikipedia ? GJ-artist (talk) 18:29, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

There is no such thing as Armenian Wikipedia. However, you can have your article translated to English by a professional. Put at the top of the talk page, and fill out the sample text to notify the article needs translation. Le Panini Talk 18:45, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
What? Of course there is an Armenian Wikipedia – what made you think there wasn't? It is here. --bonadea contributions talk 18:52, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
Wait, hold up. Did not know this existed. Sorry about that.
I figured out why I assumed there was no Armenian language. For some reason, I looked at the front page and saw those ten languages and assumed those were the only ones available. I clearly know that there are others if you literally just look to the left sidebar, but for some reason I forgot those existed. Le Panini Talk 20:34, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
Hello, GJ-artist. I don't think there's a way of transferring an article directly: you'll need to create an article hy:Ծրագրակազմի Ճարտարագիտություն in whatever way hy-wiki allows you to create articles, and then paste the source into it. (If you "edit" your sandbox with the source editor, you can then copy the whole content of the edit box). --ColinFine (talk) 19:12, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
GJ-artist and ColinFine I think that m:Help:Transwiki may give the answer. —teb728 t c 23:41, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
GJ-artist. The transwiki method has the advantage of preserving page history as required by copyright. But I see that you are the sole author; so ColinFine's copy-and-paste method would be easier. —teb728 t c 00:29, 8 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello, IP editor. The article in question is James Davidson (ornithologist). Since he died in 1925, any photos you have are probably in the public domain. Please upload the photos to Wikimedia Commons. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 03:04, 8 November 2020 (UTC)

Australia

Our town in Australia , NSW , Gwydir Shire Council 2402 have started to post council meeting recorded onto your site . claimed as being democratic . But the other day when I found them and listened to them , I reported some concerns with statements made during the meeting . Now this seems to have been removed and others can't hear the same comments , is this correct for them to remove sections and yet claim its being done to comply with the democratic ideal .

It's all new stuff here , but should they be able to remove information .

Thanks for any helpful information , its better we can at lest hear these parts .

Thanks David Goode 1.129.105.21 (talk) 02:39, 8 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello IP editor "David Goode". I looked at the history of the Gwydir Shire article and do not see anything about council meeting records. There is no discussion at Talk: Gwydir Shire, which is the proper place to discuss changes to the article. Am I missing something? Cullen328 Let's discuss it 03:16, 8 November 2020 (UTC)

Regarding Article Approval and Making it Encyclopedic

Hey there fellow editors, I had recently written an article on ELGi Equipments which got deleted for sounding to 'promotionalish' I wish to state that I do not have any connection to the company and I realized that I added too much citation by linking websites of the company and it's subsidiaries. I request you to help me out on this particular article in making it wiki friendly.

Thanks and Regards Fibrointech (talk) 04:14, 8 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello Fibrointech. An acceptable Wikipedia article neutrally summarizes what independent, reliable sources say about a topic, and references to those sources should be included, so that readers can verify what is in the article. Your draft includes only one reference and there are many paragraphs that are entirely unreferenced. That won't fly. Please read Your first article and follow the advice you will find there. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 04:54, 8 November 2020 (UTC)

Cite error references missing key

Hi there, the article I am working on for a Wikipedia Education class - Commercial Radio Australia, has just received a notification of a "cite error" at the bottom of the page, saying that two references are not used in the content. I am confused as to how this is the case - as both references are used in the article. Could someone help me with how to address/eliminate these?

I have also noticed that this Wikipedia page is flagged as having an "unclear citation style". This flag appeared before I cleaned up the notes and references sections. I have since polished the references to ensure there is a clear citation style - is there a way in which I can remove this template?

Thanks SM9237 (talk) 23:25, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

No, the references with those names are not used (i.e. there is nowhere in your article that contains the sequence ). You have a similar reference (the same title, but a different URL) as reference 9. I haven't looked at the other one.
If you are happy that you have remedied the problem in the cleanup tag, you may remove it: simply find the template at the top of the source and remove it. --ColinFine (talk) 23:52, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
@SM9237: As I previously advised you in Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions/Archive 1082#References appear in Notes section upon using "Cite" Tool, you should not just unilaterally change the citation style of an article to something you prefer per WP:CITEVAR. You should’ve at least tried to discuss this on the article’s talk page first or tried to adopt the style already established in the article. This kind of thing can sometimes lead to problems between editors, particularly when one of them is a new editor (like a student editor) who may not be very familiar with Wikipedia. The reason I tagged the article with Unclear citation style was because you were formatting the citations you were adding using a citation style different from the one established by earlier contributors. — Marchjuly (talk) 04:59, 8 November 2020 (UTC)

Stopping a red link going to a disambiguation page

If I write author name and the author does not exist, it goes to the create an new page. However, if the author name is not unique, it goes to a disambiguation page. I don't want to add the new name to the disambiguation page - no red links. If I Leave the link disambiguating, a kindly bot writes on my talk page. How do I stop a red link that needs disambiguating, diambiguating? What is the best practice here? Sciencefish (talk) 10:04, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi Sciencefish, welcome to the Teahouse. You could pipe the link to a target other than the dab page. Example: Name of person. Regards, Zindor (talk) 10:33, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

Meta data in my photos can lead to my address. Can it be deleted?

As the subject says: can the meta data with my location be deleted from my pictures? Or can someone do this for me? Maybe it can be automated or something? I obviously don't feel too comfortable with the knowledge that people can find my home and get access to the things I photographed! Marc NL (talk) 09:23, 8 November 2020 (UTC)

@Marc NL: Three points: Firstly, in future, try to remember to delete exif data before uploading if youve set you camera to add personal information. Secondly, your question needs to be asked at Wikimedia Commons, which is where I assume your images were uploaded to. Thirdly, it's always best to approach an administrator there by email with your concerns, rather than using a public forum, as this tends to advertise the issue and thus make people go and look. Pictures of notable people on Wiki articles that are not about those people

Is it appropriate to put a picture of a notable person (who has his own Wikipedia page) on other pages which are relevant to that person? For instance, in the case of Rodney Atkins, the country musician, I put a photo of him on two schools that he attended where his name is mentioned as a notable alumnus: Walters State Community College and Tennessee Technological University; plus on his hometown of Cumberland Gap, Tennessee; but another editor, AppalachianCentrist removed those pictures. Please tell me what the policy is for placing pictures in such cases, because I have seen many pages where notable alumni or people from a small town who became well-known, do have their photos on those related pages. Thanks. 64.90.222.203 (talk) 09:17, 8 November 2020 (UTC)

(This is the first time I have used the teahouse.) Hi there, you dont know me and I dont know you, but I'm currently involved in an edit war on the article British Columbia, I put a fact on there about the capital of BC, so I wrote that Victoria is on Vancouver Island, which is completely true. An administrator rejects my contribution and reverts it. He also emails an administrator on his talkpage regarding another one of my problematic edits on Donald Trump, I put it back up there (the fact about Victoria) when I noticed what he had done, so i wrote it again, a different admin reverts it. I dont want to get banned for edit-warring, and I have no idea why two admins would revert my edits on BC. If any of you guys could help me with this problem I would be extremely grateful. Thanks

The fact that Victoria is on Vancouver Island is stated in the geography section. The Wikilink to Victoria, British Columbia has the same information. In my opinion, it does not also need to be in the lead of British Columbia. As advised by teb728, if you disagree, try to start a discussion on the Talk page of the article. My wikipedia pages stuck in review?

Hi I have submitted two pages one on a public figure/author!/activist called Scott McGlynn and a TV show called Car and Country. I submitted them nearly a month ago with no response, is this normal? To top it off Scott has had an email from a freelancer saying they spotted his page in review and have offered to perfect it so it will get reviewed/sorted quicker for a fee. This doesn't seem right, can someone offer advice for next steps? 146.90.58.149 (talk) 11:45, 8 November 2020 (UTC)

(Remember to log in before posting). On your draft it states "This may take 3 months or more, since drafts are reviewed in no specific order. There are 3,398 pending submissions waiting for review." I'm not sure how you are aware of a freelancer contacting the subject of your draft(do you have a conflict of interest?), but we cannot stop that from happening. Wikipedia does not endorse or encourage paid editing, but it is not against policy as long as the paid editor complies with the paid editing policy and declares that they are being paid. It's doubtful though that a paid editor could speed up the process, as there are a limited number of editors who review drafts. 331dot (talk) 11:51, 8 November 2020 (UTC)

Trivia and pop culture sections on articles for everyday subjects

Hi. If anyone wants to take a look, a lot of our articles for numbers (ex. 20 (number)) are loaded with trivia sections pertaining to their usage in popular culture (like music, sports teams, and overall non-mathematic and irrelevant topics). Almost all of these are trivial things like a certain sports team containing a certain number of players (seriously?) or an album being named after a number. It's basically just an incorporation of the disambiguation page into the article, which is really redundant since we already link the disambig at the top of the article for readers to find different topics; we don't need repeats. Not helping is the fact that a majority of this information is unsourced.

There's also sections dedicated to certain privileges attainable at certain ages. Those might be helpful as we don't have certain articles for the ages (ex. "20 (age)", but then again there's nothing much to say about being a certain age and we already have separate articles denoting the various age spans from birth to old age), but they also suffer from the same problem of uncited statements, and we already mention these facts in the articles for the various stages of aging.

That said, is it really necessary to dedicate whole sections in number articles to its trivial details in culture? I think only stuff about the numbers' impact in mathematics and the history behind said numbers should be documented. Bearswitch (talk) 19:20, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

@Bearswitch: This is something that you should bring up on the article's talk page and get consensus from other editors.  Ganbaruby! (Say hi!) 12:57, 8 November 2020 (UTC)
Bearswitch, I find that the information quite interesting in general although I can both understand that it can be overdone, and other editors would prefer less of it. while I can appreciate a mindset that believes an article about a number should restrict itself to the mathematical properties in the history of the number qua number, I suggest that members exist in many fields other than just mathematics, and that made sense to talk about the usage of the number in other contexts. Where else would you put such interesting information? I have more sympathy about the items that relate to the rather than the number, but I fear I am venturing into points that deserve to be made on the talk page rather than here. Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. Wikipedia does not claim to be free of bias. Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources state. Any bias in sources will be reflected in Wikipedia; this is why the sources are presented to readers so they can examine and judge them for themselves. If you are willing to collaborate with others regardless of political viewpoint, and have independent reliable sources to support information you feel is needed, you are welcome to offer your suggestions on article talk pages. 331dot (talk) 16:05, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
Yes. But Earth's inner core obviously needs a more anti-left perspective. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 16:11, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
I'm sure we could. There's far too much right wing propaganda in the corners of Wikipedia than there should be. Unfortunately, we live in a world right now, at least in the U.S., where correct, empirical facts are considered leftist pinko commie propaganda by many people living in a Fox News-Rush Limbaugh echo chamber, and the mainstream media (the most unbiased, just-the-facts corners of it), are branded leftist because they report reality. Actually they too have been compromised by the conservative movement into at least sipping the Kool-Aid, too scared to call out alternative facts as lies when they butt up against reality, and who think being unbiased is trotting out the kooksiest lunatic fringe to give their opinion on reality, on science; uggg, it makes me sick.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 16:14, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

Parler Social Media Article/Page

Hello, I would like to edit the Parler article (specifically the "useage" section) to reflect Facebook and Twitters growth in their first 2 years of operation. This would be to provide contrast for Parler's performance since their founding and would provide fair and balanced projections to future investors and users.

How would I go about doing this? I have done the research and most of it is posted on the respected wiki articles about the history of facebook and twitter.

thank you 172.58.188.12 (talk) 16:34, 8 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello, IP user. That sounds like original research to me. If you can find a reliable source independent of both companies that compares the growth of two companies, then that comparison may possibly be appropriate in either or both articles, but in the absence of an published independent comparison, it would be quite improper to talk about another company's performance in an article. Note that providing "fair and balancecd projections to future investors and users" is no part of Wikipedia's mission. The fact that you want to do so makes me wonder if you have a connection with Parler? If so, please read Conflict of interest carefully. --ColinFine (talk) 20:51, 8 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi there... "it would be quite improper to talk about another company's performance in an article" Yes that is quite ironic because that is all the "usage" section on the Parler article I am referring to does, all that it talks about is Facebook and Twitters performance lol, so you see the irony? In fact reading the "usage" section prompted me to my investigation of the first two years performance of Facebook and Twitter.

Thank you both for your help, I will research further and see what I can accomplish.

Nick, Thank you for that answer. I thought Userboxes were under some sort of "bureaucratic" control to prevent misuse. So, I will try to make one. Charles Juvon (talk) 23:41, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
@Charles Juvon: No. Within reason, you are free to create a userbox for your own, or others' use, although there are many that do exist already. Just avoid creating something that others may deem offensive, as that would almost certainly be deleted. Good luck. Let us know what you eventually create! Need help with Judge Roy Bean episode section

I've just spent most of today trying to add an Episode section to the article Judge Roy Bean. I've added episodes to other TV series articles, but today I kept getting formatting messes, and finally ended up with something that wasn't horrible. But there are two mistakes.

When viewing the article there are two }} at the beginning of the section, and I can't figure out why. Also, the References title was appearing before the Episodes, so I deleted ==References== temporarily, planning on putting it back in once I got the Episodes straightened out, but now I can't figure out how to put it back into the article so that it appears in the proper place.

Right now I can't think straight, so could some kind soul go to Judge Roy Bean and fix my mistakes for me. Thank you in advance for correcting my problems. Karenthewriter (talk) 00:26, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Is Warren Zevon's "Accidentally Like A Martyr" notable or should I move on to something else?

Hello Wikipedia Editors! I am new to this so please excuse anything odd I do here. (And polite advice correcting my behaviour is welcomed!)

I created a DRAFT Article on Warren Zevon's song 'Accidentally Like Martyr'. I did this because on the main Warren Zevon article there is a list of five song in the opening paragraph: "Poor Poor Pitiful Me", "Accidentally Like a Martyr", "Mohammed's Radio", "Carmelita", and "Hasten Down the Wind". All of these songs except "Accidentally Like a Martyr" have separate articles. I felt possibly it should also have a separate article -- but I'm still new at determining notability. So I wrote of the draft. In doing so I found significant references from different sources. The article was rejected for lack of notability by a very knowledgeable editor (WP.NSONG)

So my question is: Should I work to improve the support for the draft article or should I forget it and move along to something else?

Thanks! Rob J RJHeron (talk) 00:26, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

RJHeron Your draft Draft:Accidentally Like a Martyr was Declined actually, which is less severe than Rejected. Reasons given by the reviewer, including not meeting the guidelines at WP:SONG. Be aware that some of the songs you listed as examples are in fact articles, but criticized for lacking references. David notMD (talk) 02:40, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

You are welcome to make the edit yourself, or if you cannot, make an edit request on the article talk page. Please check the article carefully, I'd be surprised if that hasn't been mentioned yet, though. 331dot (talk) 10:23, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
Since anyone can be nominated for a Nobel peace prize, this is somewhat meaningless.--Shantavira|feed me 10:37, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Acceptable sources

Hello fellow wikipedians! I am currently writing an article on a YouTuber, and used "unacceptable sources" such as Twitter and SocialBlade. I was wondering what sources would be acceptable because other sources that I could find were all dubiously unsourced. Cheers! Azpineapple (talk) 05:02, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

@Azpineapple: see WP:RS. Victor Schmidt (talk) 07:09, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
And WP:BLP. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:35, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
Azpineapple I'm afraid very few proposed articles on YouTubers succeed in establishing their notability. I suggest you read WP:NYOUTUBE for guidance.--Shantavira|feed me 10:44, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
Ok, thank you all so much! Azpineapple (talk) 11:45, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Why submitting the draft for review

If editors can move a page from draft to article directly, then why there is the process of submitting the draft for review. Adishere (talk) 12:04, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi Adishere. I think there are a couple of reasons for this.
 1. Not all editors may be able to move a page. I believe only WP:AUTOCONFIRMED accounts can do so, but there might be other reasons as to why an editor might not be able to do so.
 2. Not all editors should be moving a page. Lots of poor articles are created by editors who might mean well, but just don’t know enough about creating a proper Wikipedia article to do so; so, lots of articles (particularly by newer editors) often end up being draftified or otherwise tagged or nominated for deletion. There are also editors who might be trying to create articles about subject for which they have a WP:COI or maybe even are subject to WP:PAID; so, even though these editors might mean well, they might not have a good understanding of WP:NOT and there effort might be too promotional or too soon for a Wikipedia article to be written.
Submitting a draft for review is optional, but drafts accepted by experience reviewers do seem to have more staying power when it comes to Wikipedia notability because reviewers generally don’t accept drafts that they think will end up quickly nominated for deletion for lack of notability. It’s not a 100% guarantee that a draft approved by a reviewer will never end up nominated for deletion, but there does seem to be less of a chance of that happening. Even so, many good articles have been created that were never submitted for review as a draft. So, if someone thinks they can create a proper article without submitting a draft, then they’re free to give it a try. — Marchjuly (talk) 12:28, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
@Adishere: I'll just add, if I may, that everything put into what we call 'Mainspace' (i.e. the live encyclopaedia that everyone can see) needs to be of encyclopaedic quality right from the very start. If it isn't, it's highly likely to be deleted - often 'speedily deleted' - as 'promotional' or 'non-notable'. Only if a poor article is deemed to have a degree of merit worth improving might it be moved into draft space. By contrast, an editor submitting a draft via Articles for creation process is able to receive helpful feedback as to what needs to be addressed to make it acceptable. It can be submitted multiple times (providing genuine steps have been made to improve it between each one). Using a metaphor of an athletics track, whilst going via AFC might initially seem to be placing extra hurdles to jump over to reach the finishing line of Wikipedia Mainspace, the alternative is that someone trying to reach that finishing line by taking a shortcut is quite likely to simply find themselves disqualified, and with no leeway given. Whichever of these two routes are taken, all the new articles arriving in Mainspace still have to go through one further 'New Page Review' process before we allow Google to index them. At that point it can be deleted, draftified or send for a deletion discussion. Each step has its backlogs, so patience is always needed, as everything here is done by volunteers who give their time generously. Nick Moyes (talk) 13:51, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Do I always need third-party sources

If I want to update numbers for a company, like revenue or AUM, which on the Wiki article are outdated, but the only place I can find more recent numbers is the company's own website, can I use the website as the source for the new numbers? Thanks. Pollstart (talk) 13:04, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Welcome to the Teahouse, Pollstart. Yes, for minor details like staff numbers, number of fleet vehicles, turnover, it's normally accepted that using links from the company's own website is acceptable if no other source can be found. Please make sure you don't forget to check any existing link is also updated to reflect newer content. Such sources should not, however, be used to write about the company in broader terms. Here, as you clearly understand, reliable third party sources are needed, and not those based upon press releases from that company. Nick Moyes (talk) 13:56, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi, Is there any body who can tell me how to upload my image on wikipedia. Tahirabbasbaig (talk) 14:19, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

@Tahirabbasbaig: Try the Upload Wizard at Commons:Special:UploadWizard.  Ganbaruby! (Say hi!) 14:26, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
@Tahirabbasbaig: Welcome to the Teahouse. Please don't try to upload an image of yourself to accompany the page you created about yourself (Tahirabbasbaig). I'm afraid I have just deleted it. You might have been under the impression that Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia that anyone can edit and that anyone can create a LinkedIn-like profile about themselves here. The former is true; the latter is certainly not. We are not a free hosting site for people, and any image of that sort would be deleted, as would any such article. Sorry this sounds harsh, but this encyclopaedia is only for articles about Notable topics or Notable people. Nick Moyes (talk) 15:38, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Editor on my page

Hi! Could someone please inform me, whether I can make someone else editor on my page? Thanks a lot! Helen Schott (talk) 11:19, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Welcome to the Teahouse, Helen Schott. Pages on Wikipedia do not have just one editor: almost anyone can edit almost any page. Does that answer what you want to know? —teb728 t c 11:46, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
Hello, Helen Schott, and welcome to the Teahouse and to Wikipedia. I'm afraid that you have done what many new editors do, and plunged straight into possibly the hardest task there is - creating a new article - before having learnt how Wikipedia works. As teb728 says, almost anybody in the world can edit almost any article (or other page): nothing belongs to a particular editor. However, the page where you have tried to create an article is your User page, which is not for articles, but for you to share (if you choose) some information about yourself as a Wikipedia editor.
The article you have started to write there shows another very common mistake for new editors: you have written it without including any references. This is like building a house and expecting to add the foundations afterwards: the references are, in a very real way, the foundations of any Wikipedia article. Please have a look at your first article. --ColinFine (talk) 13:04, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello ColinFine (talk), thanks for the information. I know I did not put references, but I have not finished at all yet. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Helen Schott (talkcontribs) 13:36, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

@Helen Schott: Just to try to help you understand: It is convention that nobody edits another person's sandbox article(s) unless the user who created it explicitly invites someone/others to do that (or if another editor spots unacceptable content such as copyrighted material). Whilst Draft articles are more open for others to edit, it is still also common practice for most other editors to stay away. But if any do spot errors or want to add suggestions, they are free to do so, and I hope you'd be understanding of that. Once a draft article has been accepted into the main encyclopaedia, absolutely anyone is free to contribute to its improvement, of course.
BTW: When drafting articles it is always better to start by collating the references, and then only to use what they say to write article content. That way (and especially when you have a conflict of interest, or know someone personally) you don't fall into the trap of writing what you happen to know, rather than only what existing sources say. I admit to having done both, myself, but the second way is better. Here's a helpful guide on citing sources such as books, journals or websites: WP:REFBEGIN.
Also: I have re-enabled your main Userpage for its intended purpose (i.e. to say a little about yourself and your editing interests, rather than being a redirect to your draft) and have copied your COI declaration from Draft:Ron M.A. Heeren to that page for you.  Does that all make sense? Nick Moyes (talk) 14:24, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello Nick Moyes thanks again for the information, although it sounds very complicated, but I will try to manage. I would like to invite a colleague who is copywriter and has more experience with this to my sandbox so that she can edit. Could you tell me how I should do that? Or where I can find that instruction? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Helen Schott (talkcontribs) 15:50, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

@Helen Schott: Editing Wikipedia is like learning to drive. Start slowly, build up speed as confidence grows and only travel to distant destinations when you know you're ready. (But think of a brand new article as a 'big destination' - it's the hardest task anyone can do here.) There is no need to formally invite someone to edit on your sandbox page. Just send them the link (either by email or by leaving a note on their usertalk page.) They can also edit your sandbox as an unregistered IP, if they wish. My only suggestion is to leave a note on the page you want them to edit on, clarifying that it's OK for them to do that. The message would actually be aimed at people like me - or other editors - who might stumble across it and wrongly conclude someone was tampering with your sandbox. Make sure you add in the key references - copywriting is no use if the source material isn't already there for them to work from. Having learned how to add references by reading WP:REFBEGIN (or my own guide at WP:ERB), should you want to reuse one reference in different places, there is help at WP:REFNAME. I advise using our source editor (the one you have to use to edit this page) as it's easier to add citations with it than in Visual Editor. But the choice is yours. At the very least, just paste in bare urls into your draft to assist your friend to extract stuff from those sources. I suspect he will met our notability criteria for academics, but see WP:NPROF to guide you. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 17:06, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello there! Anyone can edit a page, unless it’s protected (e.g Donald Trump due to recent vandalism)

Why do edits disappear after "preview" is selected?

I spent about an hour doing proposed edits to an article, selecting "preview" to look at my progress. When I returned to "edit" funciton my edits were gone. Did I hit the wrong link? Vernon Miles Kerr (talk) 16:01, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Vernon Miles Kerr, It seems you probably used your browser to navigate out, instead of using the 'x' button in the preview window. —moonythedwarf (Braden N.) 16:02, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
@Vernon Miles Kerr: That can be really annoying. Another cause (where I sometimes lose edits myself) is when I use my mobile phone to edit from. I might pause for a while and then return, only to find the phone's first action is to wake up, refresh the screen for me, and thus lose all my edits. It is never wise on any platform to spend an hour editing without saving - and the same goes here on Wikipedia. Previewing is always sensible, but I'm sorry you lost your hard work and that it doesn't put you off from contributing. Making smaller edits and saving each one with an edit summary really is the best way to proceed. It also allows you to find and perhaps revert specific edits you don't like without removing all the rest. Every page here has a 'View History' tab or link which lets you see the history of every (saved) edit made to it from the day it was created. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 16:24, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
FWIW I always copy my edits to the clipboard before previewing or publishing. This is also useful in the case of an edit conflict.--Shantavira|feed me 17:08, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Where to put references

In Wikipedia, what is the classic way of placing references? In other words, should I put references before or after the period? D4135t (talk) 16:40, 9 November 2020 (UTC) D4135t (talk) 16:40, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Does this count as an orphan?

So I was clicking through "random article" and stumbled upon Lida Fleitmann Bloodgood, which I believe may be an orphan. Apart from the redirects and my sandbox, the only page that links to it is Piping Rock Club which uses it in one of the references, does this count? SnazzyInfinity (talk) Special:Contributions/SnazzyInfinity 16:02, 12 November 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for the stumble. I've proposed the article for deletion as it does not appear to be a notable topic. It should be gone in a week. Mathglot (talk) 02:01, 13 November 2020 (UTC)

Confusion about relevance of topic information

Hey guys, I'm currently editing the stub and i am confused as to whether the title of the stub "Europe, the Middle East and Africa" relates broadly to the continents and their relationship with one another (that is, anything on the continents can be included in the article) or whether it is confined to "EMEA" (industry specific term). Can someone please give me some direction? Mazz2129 (talk) 10:57, 12 November 2020 (UTC) Mazz2129 (talk) 10:57, 12 November 2020 (UTC)

I have removed the stub classification.--Shantavira|feed me 12:42, 12 November 2020 (UTC)
Greetings Mazz2129, yeah, I'm afraid you indeed confused the topic: As far as I see, the article is supposed to be just about the term "EMEA" and anything related to it, and not the continents in general. Just adding information (even though properly researched and cited!) to it does not automatically improve a stub. I would like to hear the opinion of more veteran editors on this, but imo only stuff related to "EMEA" makes sense here, and thus the article would need to be substantially trimmed back again. Sorry! (jyi @Shantavira, I believe this wasn't about stub status, but about article scope) --LordPeterII (talk) 12:47, 12 November 2020 (UTC)
@Mazz2129: I agree. We certainly have plenty of coverage in more specific articles about Europe, Middle East, and Africa, and even more specific articles, like History of Europe, Early Middle Ages, Fall of the Western Roman Empire, etc.. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 02:06, 13 November 2020 (UTC)

Soundtracks to video games

Hi. I just wrote and made the whole soundtrack for the page on Skate 3. My question is, should I do it for more video games? It does take quite a while to do, and I don't just want to spend an hour or so doing it and then, 15 minutes later, get it removed for "being an excessive dump of information". Thanks! Nolanisntfunny (talk) 18:00, 12 November 2020 (UTC) Nolanisntfunny (talk) 18:00, 12 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello, Nolanisntfunny. No, in my opinion that isn't appropriate unless there has been indepdendent discussion of the soundtractk: see WP:INDISCRIMINATE. --ColinFine (talk) 22:35, 12 November 2020 (UTC)
Just a quick editing question, Nolanisntfunny. Shouldn't it say: "consists of" and not "consisted of"? Nothing is past tense when it still is in existence. Actually, does the sentence even need to be included? It's pretty self-evident that these are the titles that consist of the soundtrack. Even albums do not have this preface. Maineartists (talk) 22:45, 12 November 2020 (UTC)
First up, thanks Maineartists , I have fixed that. Second up, ColinFine , could you explain that to me a little clearer? WP:INDISCRIMINATE seems vague to me. I also don't see why there needs to be independant articles on it's soundtrack... there are millions of independant articles on Skate 3 and the soundtrack of Skate 3 is a direct part of Skate 3. Besides, it's got TONS of notable groups in it, such as Pixies, Joy Division, Johnny Thunders, etc. I'll keep it for now unless I get a few more opinions on it... that was a pain in the ass to do, and I don't want to doink it quite yet. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nolanisntfunny (talkcontribs) 01:17, 13 November 2020 (UTC)
@Nolanisntfunny: Not commenting on whether it should be in the article or not, but please please see RWBY#Volume 1 Soundtrack and Assassin's Creed (video game)#Music for examples of how other game articles format soundtrack listings using Track listing. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 02:54, 13 November 2020 (UTC)
