Virginia McLaurin (born March 12, 1909) is an American community volunteer and supercentenarian who resides in Washington, D.C.

Early life and education

Virginia McLaurin was born in South Carolina on March 12, 1909.[1] In her childhood she worked in the fields with her parents, and left school at eighth grade.[2]

Career

She worked as a seamstress,[1] as a domestic helper for families in Silver Spring, Maryland, and managed a laundry shop.[2]

Since the early 1980s, she volunteers forty hours a week at the Roots Public Charter School, as a Senior Corps Foster Grandparent.[3] In 2013, she received a volunteer community service award from Mayor Vincent C. Gray.[4]

A local pest control company got rid of the infestation and gave her a free bed.[5] She gained national attention after a visit to the White House on February 18, 2016 to celebrate Black History Month,[6] as a video of her dancing with President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama went viral on social media.[3]

On March 11, 2016, McLaurin received the President's Volunteer Service Award for her two decades of service to schoolchildren.[3] On May 27, 2016, she attended a Washington Nationals baseball game and was presented with a custom jersey on the field.[7] She celebrated her 107th, 108th and 109th birthday's with her favourite Basketball team the Harlem Globetrotters[8][9]

Personal life

McLaurin married at 13, and later moved to New Jersey as part of the Great Migration. They had two children. Her husband died in 1939, and she joined her sister in Washington D.C.[2]
