Sasha Grey (born Marina Ann Hantzis,[3] March 14, 1988) is an American actress, model, musician, writer[4] and former adult film actress.[5][6] She first made her name in mainstream media after appearing on several popular television programs and in pop culture magazines, examining her willingness to enter the world of hardcore porn at a young age.[1][7] She won 15 awards for her work in adult film between 2007 and 2010, including the Female Performer of the Year at the 2008 AVN Awards, as well as the XRCO Awards.[8] In 2011 she published the photo book Neü Sex about her time as an adult actress.

She has also been featured in movies, television shows, music videos and advertising campaigns.[9][10] After her feature film debut as the lead in Steven Soderbergh's The Girlfriend Experience (2009), Grey shifted her focus to mainstream acting.[6] She starred in the Canadian black comedy horror film Smash Cut (2009)[11] and played a fictionalized version of herself in the seventh season of the HBO comedy-drama series Entourage. She has also appeared in independent films such as I Melt with You and Open Windows.

She is a former member of aTelecine, an industrial music band,[4][12][13] and the author of The Juliette Society trilogy. Her motto is "Lotta continua".[14]

Background

Grey was born and raised in North Highlands, California, to a working-class family. Her mother worked for the state of California, while her father was a mechanic.[1] Her father was a Greek-American, while her mother is of English, Irish and Polish descent.[15] Her parents divorced before she started middle school, and she was subsequently raised by her mother, who remarried in 2000.[1] Sasha Grey grew up Catholic.[16] Her father died in June 2015.[17]

Grey attended four high schools, among them Highlands High in California, having been unhappy in each one,[1] though she graduated a year early at the age of 17.[18] In late 2005, she attended Sacramento City College[19] and took classes in film, dance, and acting.[1] She waited tables at a steakhouse through March 2006 and saved $7,000 for a move to Los Angeles.[1] Having been in a long-term relationship with Ian Cinnamon, who was 13 years older than her, the couple split up in 2013.[13][20]

In 2010, in an interview with Maxim, Grey stated that her parents were not happy with her involvement in the adult industry, but that they were on good terms nonetheless.[21]

Career

Navarro & Grey 2007

In May 2006, Grey moved to Los Angeles and began appearing in adult films just after turning 18.[1] Originally she toyed with the name Anna Karina,[1] taken after the French New Wave actress, before deciding on her present name. The name "Sasha" was taken from Sascha Konietzko of the band KMFDM,[22] and "Grey" represents Oscar Wilde's novel The Picture of Dorian Gray,[23] or "somewhere in between" homosexual and heterosexual based on the Kinsey scale.[24][20] Her first scene was an orgy with Rocco Siffredi for Fashionistas Safado: The Challenge by John Stagliano. Grey quickly made a name for herself in the business after she asked Siffredi to punch her in the stomach; however, she later stated that she was improvising and it was taken out of context.[25]

In January 2007, Grey was the recipient of awards for "Best Three Way Sex Scene" in Fuck Slaves and "Best Group Scene" in Fashionistas Safado: The Challenge at the 24th AVN Adult Movie Awards.[26] Grey was named Penthouse's Pet of the Month for July 2007[27] and was photographed by fashion photographer Terry Richardson.[28][29]

Grey at Exxxotica in 2009

In 2008, she became the youngest person to win the "Female Performer of the Year" AVN award.[30] She also won in the category "Best Oral Sex Scene" at the 25th AVN Awards.[31] Dave Navarro's film Broken starring Sasha Grey won the AVN Best High End All-Sex Release award.[32][33] In 2008 Grey announced to represent herself in the adult industry through her own agency, L.A. Factory Girls.[34]

Grey has indicated particular appreciation for the work of adult film director Andrew Blake and pornographic actress Kimberly Kane.[35] A. O. Scott of The New York Times described her pornographic career as "distinguished both by the extremity of what she is willing to do and an unusual degree of intellectual seriousness about doing it."[36]

In 2009, she was voted number #1 on Genesis magazine's 11th annual edition of its "Porn's Hot 100" issue.[37][38] According to the Miami New Times, Grey has performed in roughly 190 adult films; she also directed Birthday Party (2009) and The Seduction (2009).[39][40][41]

Grey filmed her last adult film at age 21 in 2009, although she did not announce her retirement for some time.[42] After realizing that many of her fans still believed her to be an active performer in the industry she officially announced her retirement from adult films on Facebook in April 2011.[43]

Appearances

Less than six months after entering the adult industry, Grey was featured in the November 2006 edition of Los Angeles where she was flagged as a potential major star, perhaps the next Jenna Jameson.[1] In December 2006, Grey was interviewed on the syndicated entertainment industry news program The Insider.[44] In February 2007, she appeared on The Tyra Banks Show, discussing teenagers in the sex industry. There was speculation that the show was heavily manipulated through editing, and did not include her defense of adult film as a career choice. The show was also criticized for doing this to increase its dramatic value.[45][7]

Grey was profiled in the December 2008 Rolling Stone magazine.[46] In 2010 Julião Sarmento featured four actresses including Grey in his video-installation Leporello.[47][48][49] She was also featured in the Richardson magazine A4.[50][51] Richard Phillips created a Sasha Grey short film in the Chemosphere for the Gagosian Gallery in 2011 and portrayed her for the Frieze Art Fair in 2013.[52][53][54]

In 2011, she was named by CNBC as one of the 12 most popular stars in adult film. CNBC noted that, while she is no longer acting in adult films, her current mainstream roles have kept interest in her earlier adult film work high, and several companies continue to release compilations of it.[55] The November 2013 issue of Penthouse listed Sasha Grey in their variant of a Dirty Dozen.[56]

Modeling

Grey has modeled for Max Azria's line Manoukian,[57] footwear brand Forfex,[10] American Apparel,[58] Lovecat,[59], Exit,[60] and Max.[61] Grey also modeled for Richard Kern as a part of Vice magazine's anti-fashion layout, and appeared in a three-part VBS.tv program, Shot by Kern.[62] Kern featured Grey among others in his book Shot by Kern.[63]

Grey also appeared in Taschen's 25th anniversary reprint of Terry Richardson's Terryworld.[64] Among other collaborations with Richardson, she has also appeared in Wives, Wheels, Weapons, a companion book to James Frey's Bright Shiny Morning. She has also modeled for artists James Jean, Frédéric Poincelet,[65] Zak Smith,[66] David Choe,[67] and the Fault magazine.[68]

Grey has appeared in Playboy twice, first in a December 2009 pictorial, and then for the cover feature in October 2010.[6][69][70] In an interview with Allure in 2018, Grey said that her look was "definitely punk-inspired, definitely the anti-aesthetic, and I've definitely grown out of that because I'm older".[71]

Acting

Presenting "Broken" 2009

Grey appeared in a 2009 episode of James Gunn's PG Porn with James Gunn,[72] as well as a cameo appearance[73] in Dick Rude's 2010 independent film Quit, and starred in the 2009 Canadian low-budget black comedy/horror film Smash Cut with David Hess from the Ottawa-based Odessa/Zed Filmworks.[11][74] She plays a TV news personality who goes undercover as an actress in a horror film production, only to discover her older sister's murderer.

Grey played the lead role, "Chelsea", an escort who is paid to act as her clients' girlfriend, in Academy Award-winning director Steven Soderbergh's film The Girlfriend Experience.[75][76] Soderbergh cast her after reading her profile in Los Angeles magazine,[1] commenting that, "She's kind of a new breed, I think ... I'd never heard anybody talk about the business the way that she talked about it."[35] In having Grey prepare for her role in The Girlfriend Experience, Soderbergh asked her to watch Jean-Luc Godard's Vivre sa vie and Pierrot le Fou, both starring Anna Karina.[77] Vivre sa vie about an actress working as prostitute is a model for Chelsea, while the couple in Pierrot le Fou inspired the dynamic between Chelsea and her boyfriend.[35] Grey and Soderbergh also interviewed two escorts, and borrowed character traits and behavior from them.[35] Critics had mixed assessments of Grey's performance.[78][79][80][81][82] The film has a 66% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes based on 138 reviews.[83]

Grey played a fictionalized version of herself in the seventh season of the HBO series Entourage. Her character was Vincent Chase's new girlfriend in a multi-episode arc.[84] Grey co-starred alongside Thomas Jane, Carla Gugino, Jeremy Piven and Rob Lowe in the thriller I Melt With You which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 26, 2011.[85] She then starred in the Indonesian film Shrouded Corpse Bathing While Hip-Shaking premiered on April 28, 2011,[86] also known as Membunuh: Murder.[87] She voiced the character Viola DeWynter in the 2011 video game Saints Row: The Third, which was released in November 2011. The 2012 horror-thriller Would You Rather directed by David Guy Levy, where Grey played Amy, got a critics consensus rating of 59% at Rotten Tomatoes.[88]

In 2013, she appeared alongside Mariya Ocher in the German documentary series Durch die Nacht mit ..., their episode airing on German and French television on December 7, 2013.[89] In 2015 she was again Viola DeWynter in Saints Row: Gat out of Hell. In 2017 she was a leading actress in China Test Girls with Danny Trejo directed by Frankie Latina.[90] In 2009, she was a co-producer of Latina's Modus Operandi also starring Danny Trejo.[91][92]

In February 2011, she appeared in the music video for Eminem's song "Space Bound".[93] Grey plays the role of Eminem's girlfriend, whom Eminem strangles only to realize she is just a figment of his imagination.[94] The video was premiered on Vevo on June 27, 2011. Previously, she appeared in the music video for the 2008 song "Birthday Girl" by The Roots.[95] She also appears in the music video for The Smashing Pumpkins' song "Superchrist".[9]

Music

Grey is listed by the Narnack Records website as a guest artist on Repentance by Lee "Scratch" Perry,[96] though Perry himself denied her involvement in a 2009 interview.[97]

In 2008, Grey began an industrial music collaboration, called aTelecine, with Pablo St. Francis.[4] They later added members Anthony D' Juan and Ian Cinnamon.[12] Their first EP, aVigillant Carpark, was released in 2009 by New York label Pendu Sound on 7-inch vinyl only.[12] Grey also contributed vocals to the Current 93 album Aleph at Hallucinatory Mountain.[98] In 2010, aTelecine released their first LP, ...And Six Dark Hours Pass, and in November of the same year followed it up with the LP A Cassette Tape Culture.[99] In August 9, 2011, aTelecine's first full-length album, The Falcon and the Pod, was released (this album is the first of a planned trilogy).[100][101]

In 2012, Grey contributed to the X-TG album Desertshore.[102] aTelecine's first live concert took place on October 20, 2012, in Kraków at the Museum of Urban Engineering during Unsound Festival.[103] In July 2013, it was announced that Grey was no longer a member of the band and that Ian Cinnamon and a new vocalist, Sveio, were the only remaining full-time members.[13]

In 2015 psytrance band Infected Mushroom featured Grey's vocals in their album Converting Vegetarians II in the track Fields of Grey.[104] In 2016 Grey contributed to the Death in Vegas album Transmission. The former Throbbing Gristle members Chris & Cosey remixed Consequences of love—a Transmission song performed and composed by Grey and Fearless—and in 2017 Michael Mayer adapted the Chris & Cosey remix in his DJ-Kicks album.[105][106] In 2018 Death in Vegas published the single Honey with Grey as writer, singer, and film director of the Drone Records video.[107]

In August 2018, PIG published "That's The Way (I Like It)" featuring Sasha Grey and premiered on Pornhub.[108]

Since 2010 Grey regularly performed as DJ and published some of her mixes on SoundCloud.[109][110][111] Earmilk editor David Sikorski considered her mixes as "testament to her wide range, eclectic taste in music and her ability to understand the mechanics of solid electronic music production."[112][113]

Books

Grey signing books at FIL 2013

Grey's first photo book, Neü Sex, was released on March 29, 2011.[114][115] Scott Indrisek for Artinfo described Neü Sex as "an exercise in obsessive self-portraiture, what Grey calls a conscious effort to retain editorial authority over her image. The content veers between snapshots -- Grey with Billy Corgan, Terry Richardson -- and poetic surrealism".[116]

Her second book, The Juliette Society, an erotic novel, was released on May 9, 2013.[117][118] Karley Sciortino described The Juliette Society  as "a satirical, erotic novel that follows Catherine, a film student who enters a secret, elite sex society", and in her interview Grey stated that she "really wanted to pay homage to novels like 120 Days of Sodom and Thérèse the Philosopher and Voltaire’s Candide".[119] In her review Alisande Fitzsimons noted: "References to classic erotic literature and film are sprinkled throughout the book. Indeed, the book’s protagonist Catherine is a film student whose id and sex drive seem to be very much as one."[120]

In 2016, book II (The Janus Chamber) and in 2018, book III (The Mismade Girl) of The Juliette Society were published.[121][122][123]

Personal life

Grey identifies herself as existentialist[23][124][125] and bisexual.[126]

In a May 2016 interview, rock and pop culture critic Art Tavana compares Grey with Madonna describing her as defiantly feminist and as novelist, EDM DJ, sex-positive feminist, Formula 1 racer or action star — no matter what it is, it's more than "ex-porn star."[127] In 2009, Meghan O'Rourke wrote that Grey "sees her extremity as helping to liberate female sexuality" and "is trying to challenge old paradigms" but she called Grey's persona "a clever marketing tactic".[128] In a 2011 interview with Journal Frankfurt, Grey commented that she disliked the term "feminist", saying "I've been called one, and if I was one, I'd be a post-modern feminist".[129]

Grey is a cineast—this explains her 2006 alias Anna Karina—and likes Jean-Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut, Lars von Trier, Antonioni, Werner Herzog, and John Cassavetes among other filmmakers.[130][67][42][131][132] Sasha Grey described herself as David Bowie fan and contributed to a French homage after he died in 2016.[133][134]

Activism

In 2010 Grey supported a PeTA campaign to curb the overpopulation of dogs and cats by spaying and neutering in a nude video.[135][136] Later in this year she published her thoughts on the Mark Sanford extramarital affair in an op-ed for Newsweek 20/10.[137]

In November 2011, Grey participated in the Guest Reading Program at Emerson Elementary School in Compton, California. Parents were upset that a former adult film actress would read to their children as part of an education program. She responded to the controversy by stating, "I believe education is a universal right. I committed to this program with the understanding that people would have their own opinions about what I have done, who I am, and what I represent."[138][139] Grey also appeared on the American talk show The View, where she explained that she thought the parents should have been given prior notice of the identity of anyone who did guest reading, and that if parents had objected to her, she would not have done it.[140]

In March 2012, she published a video supporting Equal Pay Day.[141][142] In July 2013, shortly after the National Security Agency's PRISM surveillance program was first publicized, Grey starred in a Funny or Die "Sexy NSA Commercial" parody.[143]

Grey has been an advocate for the adult industry and defended her choice to be an adult film actress. In a March 2014 interview, she spoke in defense of the industry and on behalf of outed Duke University student turned adult film star, Belle Knox.[144]

Grey supported Bernie Sanders during the 2016 Democratic Party presidential primaries.[127] In 2017 she supported Planned Parenthood.[71][145]
