  • United States February, 1902 – a stagecoach-train collision in West Nyack, New York. Eight students returning from a night basketball game in a horse-drawn stagecoach were killed by a train, after getting trapped between manually-operated railroad crossing gates. First train-school vehicle collision in the United States.

  • New Zealand 1963 – 15 die in Northland, New Zealand, when a bus left the road and hit a pole. Worst road accident in New Zealand history.

  • United States March 22Congers, New York, five Nyack High School students killed and 44 injured when a train hits a school bus that failed to stop at a crossing. This incident led New York State to require school vehicles stop at all railroad crossings.

  • Soviet Union June 9 – A truck crashes into a crowd at a downtown Moscow bus stop, killing eight and injuring 18. [3]
  • Soviet Union July 9 – An army truck and a bus collide near Moscow, killing 15 Soviet soldiers. [4]
  • Soviet Union August 25 – A car knocks a billboard onto a group of people in Armenia. Eight women died. [5]

  • Afghanistan 3 November, 1982 – Hundreds are killed in the Salang tunnel fire in Central Afghanistan, following a disaster involving a Soviet fuel convoy. Estimates are as high as 2,000 dead.
