The Sachsenbrunn Dance Linden is a dance linden and a natural monument located in the Sachsendorf district of Sachsenbrunn, in the town of Eisfeld, within the Hildburghausen district, at the southern edge of the Thuringian Forest.
History and description
The linden tree is situated at approximately 480 meters above sea level and was planted shortly after the end of the Thirty Years' War. The first recorded mention of the tree dates back to 1662, with the inscription "zwey Lindlein" (two small lindens) in the inventory of the Sachsendorf municipality. One of these two trees is believed to be the current Dance Linden. As of 1994, the tree stands about 13 meters tall, with a spread of 11 meters (10 meters in 2011). The trunk circumference at one meter height was 4.3 meters in 1994 and 4 meters in 2011.[1] The linden is estimated to be around 350 to 360 years old.[citation needed]
Approximately 2.5 meters above ground, there is an octagonal platform around seven meters in diameter. This platform is accessed from the street side by a staircase, which can be closed at the top with a hinged door and comprises nine steps. The platform is surrounded by a slatted railing, with benches around its edge. It is supported by iron bands attached to the horizontal branches below. Additionally, it features a quadrangular balcony-like projection on one side. To alleviate the weight on the branches, ten sandstone pillars were erected under the platform. Historical invoices indicate that the platform was constructed in the 18th century. A second tier of branches forms the canopy above the dance platform. The branches of the lower crown grow beneath the platform and rise outside of it, effectively concealing and insulating the structure within the tree.[citation needed]
