The 2014 World Series was the 110th edition of Major League Baseball's championship series, a best-of-seven playoff between the National League champion San Francisco Giants and the American League champion Kansas City Royals.

The Royals had home field advantage for the series as a result of the American League's 5–3 victory in the All-Star Game. The Giants defeated the Royals, 4 games to 3, to clinch their third World Series championship in a five-season span and their third overall since their move to San Francisco from New York. This was also the Giants' eighth World Series championship in franchise history overall.

The Giants won Game 1 behind a strong pitching performance by Madison Bumgarner, while the Royals won Games 2 and 3, as their relief pitchers Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis, and Greg Holland limited the Giants' hitters. The Giants won Games 4 and 5, as they scored 11 runs in Game 4 and Bumgarner threw a complete game shutout in Game 5. The Royals came back to win Game 6 as they scored 10 runs and shut out the Giants, forcing a Game 7. The Giants won Game 7, 3–2, behind timely hits from Pablo Sandoval, Hunter Pence, and the game-winning RBI by Michael Morse. George Edward Crothers (May 27, 1870 – May 16, 1957) was one of the first students at Stanford University and was instrumental in putting the university on a solid legal and financial footing following the deaths of its founders, Leland and Jane Stanford. He served as a member of Stanford's board of trustees and as a California superior court judge. His monetary gifts to his alma mater made possible the construction of two student residences on the Stanford campus—one named for himself, the other dedicated to the memory of his mother. (more...)

The traditional Fleet Week celebrations in San Francisco were expanded in 1981, and held in conjunction with Columbus Day Weekend celebrations during the second week of October. The event is estimated to attract over one million people, drawn to the air show along the waterfront, including the Blue Angels (pictured), the United States Navy's flight demonstration squadron.
