There is a guide on the WMF CheckUser wiki, a global CheckUser-l mailing list for cross-wiki co-ordination, and a local Functionaries-l mailing list for discussing CheckUser results. Actual CheckUser data may not be sent to the Functionaries' mailing list.

• CIDR-formatted IP ranges (tool) are supported for both IPv4 (/$1 to /32) and IPv6 (/$2 to /128).
• Client IP information can be retrieved, if the proxy provides XFF data, by appending "/xff" to the IP or range.
• To protect site integrity and performance, the maximum results that can be shown per page is $3. More results can be generated using the paging links.

Use of the CheckUser tool must only be made for good reason and for good cause, and in accordance with the Wikimedia Foundation CheckUser policy and Privacy policy. The Arbitration Committee monitors the use of this tool, and will open an investigation when use is made inappropriately or without good reason. Misuse or abuse of this tool will necessitate the removal of the permissions by the Arbitration Committee.

Members of the Wikimedia Foundation staff who are in this list of users will have access to this tool. However, these users are prohibited from using the CheckUser tool to run any queries or checks, or view any CheckUser logs or data, without clear authorization from the Wikimedia legal staff.
