Heartbeat (Chinese: 新的心跳; pinyin: Xīn de xīntiào) is the fourth studio album by Chinese-Hong Kong singer-songwriter G.E.M., released in both digital and physical formats on November 6, 2015, by Hummingbird Music.[1] The album was written entirely by G.E.M. whilst production was handled by Austrian musician Lupo Groinig, who had previously produced for the singer on her previous albums. A global limited edition of the album was made available in Hong Kong in December 2015.

Heartbeat serves as a reflection of G.E.M.'s personal journey from 2013 to 2015, including experiences that expanded the singer's perspectives on life and relationships. The album focuses on pop and dance music and is the G.E.M.'s first studio album to be recorded entirely in Mandarin. The album received positive reviews from music critics upon release, who praised the album's sound and composition.

Six singles were promoted for the album, each with accompanying music videos, starting with "Long Distance" in February 2015. The videos for the singles "Goodbye" and "Away" have garnered over 100 million views on YouTube.

Background and release

Heartbeat was created over a span of three years, with G.E.M. penning the entirety of the album's lyrics.[2] Prior to the launch of the physical edition of the album, the singles and music videos were released on major digital platforms starting with "Long Distance" in February 2015. A global limited edition of Heartbeat was released in Hong Kong on December 23, 2015.[3]

Composition

G.E.M commented that Heartbeat served as a retrospective reflection of the singer's journey from 2013 to 2015. She recalled that his period was filled with experiences that broadened her worldview which inspired her to pen the lyrics for the entire album.[2]

"One Way Road" likens life to a train journey where one must choose a direction and keep moving forward without the possibility of turning back. Amidst societal pressure, G.E.M adopted a serene approach to write the song "Heartbeat", symbolizing her personal transformation. "Long Distance" is a song that expresses the singer's yearning for a distant individual. When crafting the song "Away", G.E.M. employed a metaphor for a relationship that ended in disappointment.[4] "Blind Spot" serves as a tribute to the singer's parents.

The inspiration for "Moments" was derived from a dream that G.E.M. experienced; she felt that "Time is gone, memories fade away, looking back blankly, we were happy but short-lived." The next day, she began the writing the song's lyrics and composing the music. "Chuck Comes Close" was inspired by the artist Chuck Close.[3] "Against the Wind" was based on the notion of not conforming to trends, which G.E.M. believed aligned well with her beliefs.[5]
