Vishwamitra Tandon is a former Indian journalist from Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh, renowned for his investigative reporting.

Early Life and Career

Vishwamitra Tandon started his journalism career with the Hindi daily Amar Ujala and served as the bureau chief in Pilibhit district from 1983 to 2005. During his tenure, he covered significant events with bravery and depth. Some of the notable incidents he reported on include:

  • 1984 anti-Sikh riots Following the assassination of Indira Gandhi.
  • 1986 Neuria Riot: A communal clash that resulted in the deaths of nearly three dozen people from both communities.
  • Ram Temple Movement: Coverage of the contentious and politically charged movement.

Prolonged Terrorism: Reporting on the severe terrorist incidents that plagued the district for several years.

  • 1991 Pilibhit Fake Encounter[1]: The case where 11 Sikh pilgrims were killed in a fake police encounter, a story that brought him significant recognition.
  • 1994 TADA Prisoner Massacre: In-depth coverage of the murder of seven Sikh TADA prisoners in the district jail.

His fearless journalism in breaking the story of the 1991 fake encounter, which led to the life imprisonment of 47 police personnel by a CBI court in Lucknow, is particularly notable.
