R. M. Kharb is a veterinarian who served as the Chairman of the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI).[1]
Early life and career
Kharb is a retired Major General from the Indian Army Veterinary Corps, assumed the role of AWBI Chairman in June 2006[2] and was the first person with a background in veterinary medicine to have been appointed as AWBI chairperson in the five-decade history of the board.[1]

Kharb faced challenges during his tenure, particularly for the traditional bull-taming sport Jallikattu. Regarding the regulation of Jallikattu, there were differences between the AWBI and the Prakash Javadekar led environment ministry, leading to tensions and legal disputes.[3][4][5]
In response to these challenges, Kharb and the AWBI took a firm stance, advocating for the enforcement of animal welfare laws and regulations. However, this stance resulted in conflicts with government authorities, including demands for resignation from the Indian federal government, both Kharb and Chinny Krishna, Vice Chairman of AWBI, refused to step down from their positions.[2][4][5]
