Naum Marković

Naum Markovic was a Serbian Chetnik freedom-fighter who participated in many battles in the Macedonian Struggle for the liberation of Serbian regions, Old Serbia and Macedonia.

Biograpghy

He was born in a Serbian village in what was then the Ottoman Empire and when the threat of the Bulgarian exarchist prostelyzers showed up in adjacent villages, it became a reminder that drastic changes were awaiting. The times were made more difficult because of Sultan Hamid's oppressive regime and the Albanian irredentists threatening the Serbian communities with constant raids. This compelled Marković to participate in the Macedonian Struggle, the land of his forefathers who, long time ago, built the monasteries and churches with their magnificent iconostasis and colourful icons and wall painting that have stood the test of time. In 1904, he joined the Serbian Chetnik Organization rather than be coerced to join the VMRO and convert to the schismatic Bulgarian Exarchate that no one among the Eastern Orthodox faithful recognize.

In his deployment at Nebregovo, Marković became a victim defending the village against Bulgarian Komitaji. He was killed on 17 April 1905. The village was targetted because it is the birthplace of Gligor Sokolović, the supreme Chetnik commander.
