BOSCO (Bangalore Oniyavara Seva Coota) is a non-profit charitable organization founded in 1980 by the Salesians of Don Bosco and officially registered in 1986 under the Society's Registration Act of 1960.[1]. The organization's acronym, BOSCO, stands for "Bangalore Oniyavara Seva Coota," which translates to "the association of those who serve youngsters on the streets of Bangalore[2]."
BOSCO's aim is to reach out to children and young individuals who are considered "at risk[3]." This includes children living or working on the streets, runaways, those in conflict with the law, orphans, children from dysfunctional families, out-of-school children, substance abusers, victims of trafficking, child marriage, child labor, neglected or abused children, unaccompanied children, and missing children[4]. As of now, BOSCO operates ten centers and has a presence at bus stands in Majestic[5](Bangalore), and adjacent railway stations[6][7].
History
In 1980, students from Kristu Jyoti College in Bangalore initiated a weekend project called 'Project Outreach' to provide safety, care, and friendship to street children. This evolved into a daily intervention offering services such as recreation, medical care, counseling, and outings[8].
BOSCO Yuvakendra, established in 1985, served as a drop-in center and a focal point for activities where children could interact with caring adults. It provided a space for street children to engage in various activities and receive support.
Centers
BOSCO operates several centers to address the diverse needs of the young people. These centers include BOSCO Yuvodaya, BOSCO Mane[9], BOSCO Yuvakendra, BOSCO Nilaya[10], BOSCO Life Skill Training Centre Sumanahalli, BOSCO Vikas, BOSCO Nivas, BOSCO Rainbow Home[11], Vatsalya Bhavan, and BOSCO Yuvaspandana. Each center focuses on specific services and support, such as education, skill training, and rehabilitation[12]
Projects
In addition to its centers, BOSCO runs various projects to deliver specific services to target groups. These projects include CHILDLINE 1098, BOSCO Railway CHILDLINE, BOSCO Foster Care Project[13], The Child Safety Net Project[14], and The Special Juvenile Police Unit.
Campaigns
BOSCO participates in and initiates campaigns throughout the year, like World Environment Day, World Day Against Child Labour[15], International Day of the Girl Child, Shaale Kade Nanna Nade[16], International Day of the Missing Child, and Human Rights Day.
