The Canadian Journal of Occupational Therapy (French title: Revue canadienne d'ergothérapie) is a peer-reviewed academic journal that covers the field of occupational therapy. It was first published in 1933 and is the oldest occupational therapy journal with the same title.  The journal is published quarterly by Sage Journals on behalf of the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists  It is an English/French bilingual journal.

History and overview

Volume 1 of the Canadian Journal of Occupational Therapy was produced in September 1933.  Two thousand copies were distributed to ‘superintendents of hospitals, sanatoriums, and institutions that had more than 25 beds’ to promote a new profession.  The first Editorial Board comprised five physicians (Dr Heaton, Dr Hyland, Dr Elliott, Dr Franks and Dr Faulkner and three occupational therapists (Miss Perigoe, Miss de Courcy O’Grady and Miss Wright).[1]

Dr Heaton was the founding editor, serving between 1933 and 1937.[2]   The current Editor-in-Chief is Brenda Vrkljan

The Canadian Journal of Occupational Therapy (CJOT) is published quarterly by Sage Journals. Authors from a Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) institution may publish their articles as open access with no Article Processing Charge (APC).

Some articles and editorials have marked the development of the Journal over the decades.[3][4][5][6] According to a bibliomatic study of 13 English language occupational therapy journals, the Canadian Journal was one of the top six journals published in a 2015.[7]   The Canadian Journal is one of four of 43 occupational therapy journals published in more than one language.[8]

The official journal of the American Occupational Therapy Association, the Archives of Occupational Therapy, was launched in April 1922. The name changed to Occupational Therapy and Rehabilitation in 1924.[9] It became the American Journal of Occupational Therapy in 1947.
