Life and Debt begin with a montage of several Jamaican news broadcasts involving violent altercations and protests, before showing the Director of the International Monetary Fund, Horst Kohler speaking briefly on globalization stating that “The Issue is to make globalization work for the benefit of all. That there will not be a good future for the rich if there is no prospect for a better future for the poor.” Afterword the broadcast ends to show a basket robbins commercial, before showing a man singing the Buju Banton song Destiny before showing three men around a campfire, with one reading Exodus 22;25 from the King James Bible, stating “If thou lend money to any of my people that is poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as a usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury.” before cutting to the title card of the documentary.

The film starts with the arrival of vacationers to the island, over narration by Jamaica Kincaid who underlines the contrasts of how jamaica is viewed to its actual state, before proceeding to discuss and underline the economic and social situation in Jamaica and specifically the impact of International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank's policies has on the nation by leaving it in $4.6 billion in debt.
