Hello, and welcome to the Esperanza Coffee Lounge! Feel free to relax and take a break, but do remember to get back to Wikipedia eventually. Our goal is, after all, to produce an encyclopedia. Also remember to curb the amount of silliness here; having fun and being ridiculous are different things. In addition, per the discussion on the discussion on the proposals page, silliness that is, in your judgement, too much can be removed by any user, as part of the effort to present a more respectable face of Esperanza.

Any issues effecting Esperanza as a whole should be brought up on the Esperanza talk page, as all of Esperanza's members may not read this page.

How many have you read?--SUIT42 03:44, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ah well, let's see. I've read nearly all the core novels, so that's the Chronicles Trilogy, the Legends Trilogy, Second Generation, Dragons of Summer Flame, The Dragons of a New Age Trilogy, the Dhamon Saga (3 books), the War of Souls Trilogy, and Amber and Ashes. In addition, I've read one side novel, The Magic of Krynn, a great collection of short stories. I am working on Amber and Iron, second book in the new Dark Disciple Trilogy. So that is...19, with my 20th coming.
  • My big one right now is National Football League. Needed heavy referencing, major organization and copyedit problems, coherence, relevence, the whole 9 yards. Hoping to get it to Featured status. Its looking MUCH better, if I do say so myself. I have other articles I have worked on some, but right now this is my biggest project. Other than that, I've been reverting vandalism on various Pokémon pages. -SaturnYoshi THE VOICES 22:57, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Because otherwise that which is good is drowned in a sea of that which is crap. Easy enough. Re: Barnstar: I didn't want to turn it down - that would seem churlish - and, no, this isn't the Crusades. But what I didn't like was the knee-jerk "Keep because they're fun" reaction I saw a bit of at the MfD. I appealed for common sense on the main Esperanza talk page, but nobody listened. Moreschi 17:16, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Moreschi, there are so many things... but this is not the place. Dfrg.msc 1 . 2 . 3 06:27, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am a definite inclusionist, and I am ticked off by the recent rash of MfDs on cool things like WikiPlomacy, the Coffee Lounge Games, and the World's Longest Poem Project. In my opinion, people should be given barnstars for stopping rampant deletionists. Everyone is waving around policies, like WP:NOT, which essentially say that fun is banned on WP. Everyone ignores WP:IGNORE (no pun intended). If something is contributing to the encyclopedia, which in my opinion WikiPlomacy and Coffee Lounge Games were, and yet is in violation of a policy, than the policy has to lose. End of story. Wikipedia isn't for fun. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia., and everything else is here to support that. Night Gyr (talk/Oy) 20:16, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's probably best if this isn't made into a inclusionist/deletionist debate. The fact of the matter is that every editor is acting in the way they believe is best for the encyclopedia. That's the important thing. We're all working towards the greater good of the project :) Thε Halo Θ 23:42, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have to agree with Moreschi. Wikipedia is not a social networking site, or a games site. It's fine and dandy to play games; just not on Wikipedia. Ultimately, when everything is said and done, inclusionists and deletionists will stand together, look at Wikipedia, and say either "We have resolved our differences and worked together; we have brought information to the world" or "We fought and quarreled, and Wikipedia has failed". Radical? No, I don't think so. Inclusionists make the argument that "only very few things like blatant vandalism should be deleted". Is not your interest in improving Wikipedia? And tell me what value those games contribute to the encyclopedia. DoomsDay349 00:20, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

They do contribute, they just contribute indirectly. Many points were mentioned at the MfD. They help users learn wikimarkup, help stressed editors cool down so that they can return to editing as soon as possible, and keep users on Wikipedia for more periods of time, which will help some users, anyway, get more addicted to Wikipedia, and want to write a lot more. I realize that games are obviously not an essential part of the project, but if they weren't hurting anybody, and possibly helped some people overcome stress, then I don't see what the harm was. But then again, I have different views about Wikipedia than most people do.  Shardsofmetal   T   C  02:19, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Addicted to the games, or addicted to writing an encyclopedia? What's the ratio of game-playing to encyclopedia-writing going on among the average player? Night Gyr (talk/Oy) 07:54, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I meant addicted to writing articles. If a user plays a game on Wikipedia, they might check out other fun things on Wikipedia. Since most pages have many internal links, a user would probably click on many and find some neat articles that they could expand, or get ideas for new articles. I would imagine that there would be much more article edits than game edits. For the most part, I believe that Wikigames weren't as much about playing games as they are about communicating with fellow Wikipedians, and having a little fun along the way. I do realize that the priority is the encyclopedia, but I think that the games were also a good idea.  Shardsofmetal   T   C  20:48, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

(to SaturnYoshi) I know that edit count, mostly, isn't important. But it's a good gauge in most cases. Of course, there could be the person who has like 500 edits but 300 of them were spent improving 4 articles to FA class. But for the most part I think that edit count can actually be a useful tool in determining a user's value, so long as it's not the sole factor. Also, Congrats on the 1000 edits! Wiki-Story

I was on a wiki-boat trip with my wiki-parents when there was a wiki-explosion and wiki-snakes got on the wiki-boat. The snakes went wiki-mad wiki-killing all in there site. Vandal humour

"He was recently quoted, saying, I'm glad I will be gone so I don't have to hear K Fed's new album."

*snork* Have you got any funny examples of vandalism to share?

This is among the funniest things I've reverted so far: "Giraffes, contrary to popular thought, are actually carnivores. Many African tourists, hunters, and safari-leaders claim to have seen giraffes hunting and killing various animals such as hyenas, zebras, and wildebeasts, among others. Only recently was this proven true when the predation process was caught on video. It is believed that giraffes had adapted into carnivores due to lack of vegetation in their natural habitat."--Húsönd 01:34, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A "Japanophile" is a person who likes Japan, Japanese culture, or some aspect therein, like anime. (Copied from the MFD) Here is a bit of something to let you know how hard this will be.

I don't think we've fathomed how hard this is going to be. From this moment on, Esperanza is faced with twenty times more obstacles than ever, assuming we survive this MFD. No longer can we be lax; no longer can we sleep. Attack will come from every side, adversity from all corners. We will have to completely and utterly change Esperanza...sometimes that is my greatest fear. That in changing ourselves, we may destroy ourselves. But without the change we are guaranteed destruction; with it, there is a light of hope. I don't know what these changes are, but know this; we'll need them, and we'll need them bad.

It'll be tough. DoomsDay349 00:18, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Who do these deletionists think we are? Mindless robots with the sole purpose of editing Wikipedia? bibliomaniac15 Review? 00:31, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As for my two cents, since I don't feel like putting them on the MfD page:
For the general John Q Wikipedian who happens to know a bit about policies, Esperanza seems like WP:NOT. Under the WP:AGF, I put that, realising that Esperanza has little value to the encyclopedia itself. But as a member of Esperanza and one who loves it, I believe in WP:IAR, under which I believe that WP:NOT's dislike of this page is unnecessary. Esperanza is at heart (or whatever serves servers for a heart) an organization that serves to help Wikipedians who are new or needing some Wikilove. it is my personal opinion that without the efforts of their respective Esperanza friends, E@L and Kyoko would have left the project for good, and possibly (as they have said) the earth. So my motto for Espreanza is as such:Esperanza:Aiding Wikipedia, one wikipedian at a time. As such, I think that the entire MfD is unnecessary and hope that it is not passed, now or ever.
Cheering is appreciated Here --teh tennisman 01:26, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The most important thing right now is to remain united and do what's best for Esperanza, and Esperanzians. Also, consider contributing ideas to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Overhaul, in case you didn't see it at the top of the page.  Shardsofmetal  03:41, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah...--SUITWhat!? 42 01:05, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Aye... Suit, this is such a delicate situation and do not think for a second that I don't care about this, because I do. But, per the recent MFD for Esperanza, we really need to clean up the Coffee Lounge. It seems to me it'll be moved to Wikia. I really care and I'll send something your way. Just to tell you. DoomsDay349 01:10, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh well...--SUITWhat!? 42 01:12, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How do you register on IRC?

I want to use the Esperanza IRC channel, but my IRC program tells me that I need to register a username, and I can't figure out how. Could somebody please tell me how to do that? Thanks,  Shardsofmetal  03:50, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

/ns help should get you started on the basics. --Cyde Weys 17:44, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

For that matter at all, how do you access IRC? Every time I try, it says "Firefox does not know how to open this program because the protocol (irc) isn't associated with any program." Can someone tell me how to fix this? I'd love to get on IRC. DoomsDay349 22:27, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Download an IRC client, or just use IRCatwork. Titoxd(?!?) 22:42, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I used mIRC or something akin to that, do you have to pay for that? If so, how do I cancel, and are there any free ones? DoomsDay349 23:08, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I almost never get on IRC, and is also very confusing for me. I use a firefox IRC client plugin called chatzilla that seems to work well and is simple. -- ßottesiηi (talk) 23:37, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Editor review

Got quite a few unanswered ER's just sitting around waiting to be answered(including mine). Whispering 00:30, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, mine only got one review, by Randfan, and that didn't give me all the information I wanted (though I do appreciate it). —The Great Llama talk 01:16, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I wrote an essay inspired by the recent MFD. Come read it.

I have written an essay inspired by the recent MFD. Read it and tell me what you think on the essay's talk page. It can be found at: User:Jayron32/Orthodoxy and heresy at Wikipedia --Jayron32 04:28, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's not much of a start but for me i is somthing.. I'm soo happy I wrote this and I just want to show it off and also want to know what other people think of it.. I want to add more but it's it soo hard.. I went down to the Domain (Cultural Centre) and asked if they could send me some photo's (Much harder in person thean via E-mail.. O_O) soo they are going to send me a few soon.. Then I am going to go roaming around the suburb and take notes of anything major around.. There are no Schools in the suburb.. Guess the shopping Centre took up all the space.. I like to talk as this is making me happy xD I have been really down and stressed lately.. School O_O..

Next I also want to start some work on the Victor Harbor, South Australia page.. it only has a wee bit of Information for such a nice town..

Whoa, nice job! Very nice-looking article. You did a good job separating it and adding all the important nitty-gritties. Kudos :-) — Editor at Large(speak) 12:22, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The article looks AWESOME. One point, though, much of the stuff you write in the History section is unreferenced. You should go and indicate from where you got your information. It is good practice to reference every assertion of fact you make in an article. This is for two good reasons: 1) It makes the information verified, and thus heads off any potential problems for the future, and 2) It provides additional resources for people to do further research on their own should they choose to do so. --Jayron32 17:09, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Moderating"

Cyde, what's up with deleting stuff from the Coffee Lounge without archiving it? Just wondering, I thought maybe you were putting it somewhere else I hadn't found. — Editor at Large(speak) 12:22, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps Cyde didn't know about the Archiving?? Or... because "silliness" isn't supposed to be here, it's deleted altogether. -SaturnYoshi THE VOICES 15:01, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
... violation of WP:TPG (First sentence here)? I didn't think you were allowed to delete stuff. — Editor at Large(speak) 17:54, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
First of all, I'm not deleting anything. It's still in the page history. And second of all, there's no requirement that anything be archived. Do you really want the non-Wikipedia-related stuff filling up the archives? --Cyde Weys 18:20, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Cyde if your going to come here atleast have repect for the system thats here in place and, as far as all of us are concerned, works. Philc TECI 18:39, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I know it's still in the page history, but we've always archived everything -- including non-Wikipedia stuff. And I had left an important message for people here that I wanted up a little longer for everyone to read, but it got erased; I would've archived it myself in a few days (I don't particularly want it up forever ;-D). Would you object if I added the deleted material to the archives and continued archiving myself? I agree with you on removing non-wikipedia-related material out, I'd do the same thing :-) — Editor at Large(speak) 00:34, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Farewell, Coffee Lounge!

Seeing it's probably going to be deleted at it's MfD (I'm fine with that), I just wanted to post a last comment. Thank you to everyone at the coffee lounge I have met and laughed with, made friends with, and had a chat to. It's been fun. Though we won't be meeting in the coffee lounge again, I'm sure I will be seeing many of you around doing your good work in Esperanza, and I will probably be giving many of you some awards and nice things. Thank you for all the memories, even though I was only here for roughly 3 months. Goodbye Coffee lounge, goodbye. Jam01 07:34, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well. Rather somber. Relax, it's hopefully coming back...in a different form, is all. Less social-networking. Hope you come back! DoomsDay349 07:37, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Can we give it a Viking send-off? That'd be cool.--SUITWhat!? 42 07:39, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
They are definately making Wikipedia seem more like "work". I already have a job... -SaturnYoshi THE VOICES 07:40, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The fact is, Wikipedia is not a social networking site, which the coffee lounge is. So, then, if we remove the social networking and you feel less attracted to Wikipedia, perhaps you should consider your Wiki-priorities. DoomsDay349 07:42, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
How the hell does Danny Boy go? Here it is. Bye Coffee Lounge.:

Oh Danny Boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling From glen to glen, and down the mountain side The summer's gone, and all the roses falling 'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide But come ye back when summer's in the meadow Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow 'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow Danny Boy, oh Danny Boy, I love you so And when ye come, and all the flowers are dying And I am dead, as dead I well may be Ye'll come and find the place where I am lying And kneel and say an Ave there for me And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me And all my grave shall warmer, sweeter be For you shall bend and tell me that you love me And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me (It sounds better with sound) --SUITWhat!? 42 07:44, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Coming back, Hurrah! How though? Are there plans for a re-incarnation posted yet? Btw, if it does come back I wrote up some rules to help if you are interested. Also, I didn't mean to sound all somber; I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has been ivolved here! Jam01 07:53, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
My Wiki-priorities are fine, DoomsDay, it's just that it was nice to be able to have discussions with other Wikipedians that weren't about article content. -SaturnYoshi THE VOICES 08:10, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
