Page mover

User:Molandfreak

I have moved a few pages over the years with consensus, but I recently encountered a strange page move where a user moved the page Just Like Fire to Just Like Fore. I don't necessarily see the harm in having a redirect with one misspelled letter, but I'd like the option of moving a page without keeping a redirect in case I see something like this again.  Not done. Please see the notice at the top of this page. With only 2075 total edits, I don't think you have sufficient editing experience yet. Please come back when you have demonstrated a clear need for this tool, and have the amount of experience required for administrators to review your edits. As a new page reviewer I do need to move pages sometimes,The right would be handy so that I don't leave redirects.Thank you FITINDIA (talk) 14:05, 6 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Fitindia: You don't have a whole lot of RM experience, but the new page reviewer rationale is strong and your move log is filled with uncontroversial moves. I'm inclined to grant, but I do want to test knowledge on policy a bit: Say that I, as a page mover, see a page which unambiguously doesn't meet our naming conventions. I choose not to move it. Could you give me a couple reasons why I might have made that decision? ~ Rob13Talk 01:04, 9 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@BU Rob13: Hi one would be for technical restrictions say if a page like eBay or iPhone were the lower case doesn't meet our naming conventions I would pass moving the page also if I come across a page were I cannot be sure of the spelling of the page due to sources showing different spellings (usually happens with India related bio's) I would tend not to move it.Thank you FITINDIA (talk) 06:07, 9 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Fitindia: There's one reason missing from there; what would you do if the page had previously been moved to its current location? ~ Rob13Talk 17:48, 9 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@BU Rob13: Hi I would think to avoid "round-robin" moves.Thank you FITINDIA (talk) 08:38, 10 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Fitindia: The correct answer is that you would need to initiate an WP:RM discussion (unless the previous move was obvious vandalism), as the move would be potentially controversial. This avoids move warring. Does that make sense? ~ Rob13Talk 11:56, 10 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@BU Rob13: It does make sense, If there is any ambiguity in the page name rather then move the page I would initiate an WP:RM discussion so as to avoid a controversial move and have consensus instead .FITINDIA (talk) 15:09, 10 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Reason for requesting page mover rights: I frequently move pages that have incorrect titles (due to spelling or capital letter errors) and would like to be able to avoid leaving unnecessary redirects. Exemplo347 (talk) 00:59, 9 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Exemplo347: Two things. First, we frown upon moving articles into draftspace unless you sincerely believe the draft could become an article (i.e. notability is clear, no promotion, etc). Generally, if something is created in article space, it should stay there unless moved by the creator. This prevents the accumulation of drafts that will never be deleted or improved in the draftspace. Please acknowledge this in your reply. Second, what are some reasons why you wouldn't want to suppress a redirect from an incorrect title? Could you give 3–5 examples of pages you've moved where you would want to suppress the redirect? ~ Rob13Talk 01:08, 9 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
1 - Yes, I know, which is why the 4 times I have performed a move into Draft space were cases in which I believed the articles in question were not ready for Article space, but could very easily become articles with the help of the Articles for Creation process. 2 - Example 1, Example 2, and Example 3 - all cases where the capitalisation is incorrect, and where nothing else links to the pages in question. Regards Exemplo347 (talk) 01:15, 9 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Exemplo347: There's still my question about when not to suppress redirects above. Also, why not keep such incorrect capitalization redirects under Template:R from miscapitalisation? ~ Rob13Talk 03:33, 9 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
There are plenty of reasons to NOT suppress a redirect: plausible redirects, common names (or common misnomers) etc. As for the "why not keep" question, it depends - if it's a brand-new article, linked from no other articles, that has been created with mistaken capitalisation in the title, then there's no real need to keep it. It would turn into a "why keep this?" question. If, on the other hand, the article has been there for a long time then the redirect should definitely not be suppressed. Exemplo347 (talk) 03:41, 9 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
 Not done Sorry, but I'm not comfortable granting here. Suppressing redirects should be done very, very rarely. Suppressing a redirect makes it harder for the page creator to find the page, especially if they're new or on mobile where the logs don't show up as easily. A redirect from miscapitalization is a valid redirect and doesn't fall under any of the criteria for suppressing redirects present at WP:Page mover. It likely wouldn't even be deleted at an RfD, if one were started for it. Please familiarize yourself more with the specific cases where redirect suppression is authorized before applying again, and ideally spend a bit of time around RM to familiarize yourself with common practice there. ~ Rob13Talk 17:51, 9 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

To carry out technical moves per WP:MONOTYPICFAUNA. I already do quite a few myself where possible, and use WP:RMT. William Avery (talk) 22:49, 10 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
