It’s understood that "age" refers to years. In a more formal or technical document, the original phrase would be perfectly acceptable. But in a context where you want to be absolutely clear or if you’re writing for a general audience, the addition of "years old" should be done. It should be written in an accessible style. The lead should stand on its own as a concise overview of the topic.
