You and Valereee seem to be friends, so you being an arbitrator in the Syrian Kurdistan case would be a conflict of interest. You should resign from the case and give that role to someone else. --[[User:Supreme Deliciousness|Supreme Deliciousness]] ([[User talk:Supreme Deliciousness|talk]]) 00:25, 11 January 2021 (UTC)

Gerda Arendt, I find it a bit strange as to why the infobox was removed. IMO, both the Ramaeu opera navbox and an infobox would be useful additions, as both are helpful to the reader at a glance. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 20:35, 5 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, but see, you may have heard of the infoboxes wars (pictured) where that doesn't count but the wish of a former editor of that article who hasn't edited in years, but didn't like infoboxes when he did. For thoughts like yours, I was restricted by our almighty arbitration committee, - you better be careful ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:45, 5 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Template protection

Hi. I noticed that you protected Template:COVID-19 pandemic data/Indonesia medical cases chart several months ago. May I ask if you are inclined to accepting a request to protect a template or two and using a reason that is similar to this and this? I have not yet linked the templates here. LSGH (talk) (contributions) 10:36, 11 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

LSGH, I could yes, but why not just ask at RFPP? CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 17:48, 11 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've also thought of going there, but I am not sure if such a reason will always convince other admins to apply protection. LSGH (talk) (contributions) 00:59, 12 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I made a request a few days ago, but it was declined. I'm having problems with those templates lately. LSGH (talk) (contributions) 04:34, 24 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
LSGH, If an admin at RFPP declined a request, then I'm not going to accept it either. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 06:31, 24 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Interaction ban question

As Floq, the administrator who had placed the original interaction ban, is inactive, I am turning to you. This remark (and the addendum mention to DS) can be reasonably construed to be a violation of the proviso make reference to or comment on each other anywhere on Wikipedia, directly or indirectly. Nothing in the editing restriction log entry specifies an exception to that proviso. CaradhrasAiguo (leave language) 16:36, 14 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

CaradhrasAiguo, Thank you for pointing that out. I have opted to just warn Horse Eye for this violation. But let me know if it continues, as then I will start with increasing blocks. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 19:12, 14 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Unrelated IBAN question

Captain, I believe I received inaccurate advice[1] about appealing my IBAN; would you help clarify this for me? I would like to eventually appeal the IBAN (to change it to one-way in the opposite direction) by relitigating the cases which led to it; would that be appropriate? But my immediate concern is about how to deal with behavior which I have encountered since the IBAN. I was told that I should demonstrate that I am no longer bringing complaints against them, but I feel I must bring a complaint against them to immediately amend the IBAN to two-way. May I discuss my recent experience with the editor here? Kolya Butternut (talk) 22:52, 14 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Kolya Butternut, While I may have just answered a question above about IBANs, I really am not an expert in them, and generally work in other areas. You can always appeal at WP:AE,WP:AN or WP:ARCA. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 00:04, 15 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the response. Is there another admin you could recommend who could clarify this for me before I wade into noticeboard waters? I did just read the following from "Important: Appeals and administrator modifications of sanctions" at WP:AE: "Nothing in this section prevents an administrator from replacing an existing sanction issued by another administrator with a new sanction if fresh misconduct has taken place after the existing sanction was applied", which could mean a noticeboard complaint is unnecessary. Kolya Butternut (talk) 00:12, 15 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Kolya Butternut, Can't say I have anyone in particular in mind, I suggest an AE regular. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 00:14, 15 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Cite Unseen update

Hello! Thank you for using Cite Unseen. The script recently received a significant update, detailed below.

  • You can now toggle which icons you do or don't want to see. See the configuration section for details. All icons are enabled by default except for the new Green checkmark generally reliable icon (described below).
  • New categorizations/icons:
    • Megaphone Advocacy: Organizations that are engaged in advocacy (anything from political to civil rights to lobbying). Note that an advocacy group can be reliable; this indicator simply serves to note when a source's primary purpose is to advocate for certain positions or policies, which is important to keep in mind when consuming a source.
    • Hand writing Editable: Sites that are editable by the public, such as wikis (Wikipedia, Fandom) or some databases (IMDb, Discogs).
    • Red journal with an X Predatory journals: These sites charge publication fees to authors without checking articles for quality and legitimacy.
    • Perennial source categories: Cite Unseen will mark sources as Green checkmark generally reliable, Exlamation mark in orange triangle marginally reliable, No symbol generally unreliable, Stop hand deprecated, and Black X blacklisted. This is based on Wikipedia's perennial sources list, which reflects community consensus on frequently discussed sources. Sources that have multiple categorizations are marked as Blue question mark varied reliability. Note that Green checkmark generally reliable icons are disabled by default to reduce clutter, but you can enable them through your custom config. A special thanks to Newslinger, whose new Sourceror API provides the perennial sources list in a clean, structured format.
  • With the addition of the new categorizations, the biased source icon has been removed. This category was very broad, and repetitive to the new advocacy and perennial sources categorizations that are more informative.

If you have any feedback, requested features, or domains to add/remove, don't hesitate to bring it up on the script's talk page. Thank you! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 23:23, 20 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the Arbitration Committee

Congratulations on your success in the election and welcome to the 2021 Arbitration Committee. This is the first part of your induction onto the Arbitration Committee.

Please use the EmailUser function to indicate:

  • the email address you'd like to use for ArbCom and functionary business, and
  • if you wish to assigned CheckUser and/or Oversight for your term.

Before you can be subscribed to any mailing lists or assigned CheckUser or Oversight permissions, you must sign the Wikimedia Foundation's confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information (L37) and the OTRS users confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information (L45), and your name must be listed on the Access to nonpublic personal data policy/Noticeboard. If you haven't signed the agreements, please do this promptly. Instructions for signing can be found here. Again, if you want CheckUser or Oversight permissions during your term, you must sign both agreements listed in the instructions. If you have signed but your username is not listed on the noticeboard, please let me know.

Over the coming days, you will receive a small number of emails as part of the induction process. Please carefully read them. If they are registration emails, please follow any instructions in them to finalise registration. You can contact me or any other arbitrator directly if you have difficulty with the induction process.

Thank you for volunteering to serve on the committee. We very much look forward to introducing ourselves to you on the mailing list and to working with you this term.

For the Arbitration Committee,

2021 Arbitration Committee

The Arbitration Committee welcomes the following new and returning arbitrators following their election by the community. The two-year terms of these arbitrators formally begin on 01 January 2021:

All incoming arbitrators have elected to receive (or retain, where applicable) the CheckUser and Oversight permissions.

We also thank our outgoing colleagues whose terms end on 31 December 2020:

Outgoing arbitrators are eligible to retain the CheckUser and Oversight permissions, remain active on cases accepted before their term ended, and to remain subscribed to the functionaries' and arbitration clerks' mailing lists following their term on the committee. To that effect:

  • Stewards are requested to remove the permission(s) noted from the following outgoing arbitrators after 31 December 2020 at their own request:
    Oversight: Joe Roe
  • Outgoing arbitrators are eligible to remain active on cases opened before their term ended if they wish. Whether or not outgoing arbitrators will remain active on any ongoing case(s) will be noted on the proposed decision talk page of affected case(s).
  • All outgoing arbitrators will remain subscribed to the functionaries' mailing list
  • DGG, Joe Roe, and Mkdw will be unsubscribed from the arbitration clerks' mailing list at their request.

For the Arbitration Committee,

Katietalk 01:56, 22 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Discuss this at: Wikipedia talk:Arbitration Committee/Noticeboard § 2021 Arbitration Committee
  • Congratulations; I' m glad you will be there to replace me (you especially, but and that goes for the other new people also). We may overlap on one case. and if there's one think I like, it's giving advice. . Especially when I'm safely out of the war zone. DGG ( talk ) 06:43, 22 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Meh, it's artistic license. Captain Eek is now one of the Mighty Morphin Power Arbs. We just call them arbs (but not arbies), and we are also aware that arb is short for arbitrageur. Find a YouTube video for that one. ;-) Atsme 💬 📧 00:04, 24 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Atsme, I would never turn down rum in my stocking! Becoming an arbiter, well that sure is a unique stocking stuffer :P Though given the price of coal, I still don't think I'd turn coal down either. I've always wanted a coal forge to do metal working with (I make knives from time to time), but coal is pretty expensive at the consumer level, so I just use propane. Curved-Billed Thrasher FA

Hello CaptainEek,

I can try to assist you, but it will have to be somewhat sparingly. I am currently a graduate student in the middle of a Ph.D. program, so my time is a bit limited, sadly, since I have to both teach and research for the next several semesters before I finish. But I totally am for you trying to get this paper to an FA status! You have my blessings if that is what you wanted!! :) It was my dream to get all of the Toxostoma pages to be at least GA, if not FA status, several years ago, but that was back when I was an undergraduate and Wikipedia edits were much, much, easier to tackle.

I usually do not respond to my Wikipedia messages anymore, but I happened to see it at random today while searching for other emails, so your longshot worked out!! Let me know what you want from me going forward! LeftAire (talk) 19:08, 2 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good. No, I can't find fault with anything. But I'll tell you why I left my note here: you didn't say in any of the block notices or in the CU log who you thought might be a master. Often when CUs don't give those specifics, it's for DENY reasons, and I didn't know if you were definitively on the trail of a longterm socker or something like that. Anyway, glad you're on board, and thanks for taking care of this one. Drmies (talk) 14:38, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Defamation concerns

If I understand correctly, you're saying here that while discussing improvements to the 'pedia, I cannot continue to indicate that I believe that when wikipedia falsely claims, "debunked[:] the idea that SARS-CoV-2 leaked from the institute" wikipedia defames everyone who has argued that it may well have leaked from a Wuhan lab, especially when it directs readers to those arguments, especially when they are identified by name; they don't need to be quoted directly in the article. Is that the case? I have to accept it and can't argue about it? If so, I'm disgusted, and worried about the implications, but you're in charge, so I'll comply. Please provide a clear as possible a reply (Say yes or no if possible.). It seems like you didn't read that or missed it entirely, or perhaps you are under the impression that only people can be defamed, not organizations, but maybe not. Are you actually saying that my claim that not only individuals can be defamed is nonsense? I'm baffled. --50.201.195.170 (talk) 13:06, 9 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No, you cannot claim that we are defaming a class of people simply because they have a a difference of opinion. You fundamentally misunderstand what defamation is. Defamation is when we knowingly and willingly publish something that is false and harmful, monetarily, towards individuals or an organization. You are claiming that there is some nebulous class of people who believe that COVID leaked from a lab, and that we are somehow causing them harm by saying otherwise. That is preposterous. Do we defame flat earthers when we say they are wrong? No. A proper example of defamation is like if we claimed celebrity X is a murderer, when we know they aren't.
