Sudden critical illness
On 1 November, 2006, Litvinenko fell suddenly ill while investigating the death of journalist Anna Politkovskaya. He had had lunch with an Italian contact, who had passed him papers on the journalists fate.
Scotland Yard is investigating claims that he was poisoned (by thallium). The incident was widely covered in the British media on 19 November 2006, with much speculation that he was poisoned by an arm of the Putin regime, in a similar manner to that used by the Bulgarian secret service on disident journalist Georgi Markov.
