- Opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko is declared winner of the rerun of the runoff presidential election in Ukraine, with 12,000 international observers acting as supervisors.
- The first survey of language use in China reveals that only 53 percent of its population can communicate in Standard Mandarin, the official spoken language of the country.
- Near-Earth asteroid 2004 MN4 gets the highest warning ever of a four on the ten-point Torino scale. Precovery of the asteroid to 2004-Mar-15.1104 has allowed a more confident prediction. Astronomers now say it has a 1 in 56,000 chance of causing regional devastation in a collision with Earth on April 13, 2029, but continue to observe, to increase the accuracy of the prediction.
