- The strongest earthquake in 40 years, with a magnitude of 9.0, rocks the Indian Ocean off Sumatra; tremors and subsequent tsunamis result in over 23 000 deaths in Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Thailand and other adjacent coastal areas.
- Opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko is declared winner of the rerun of the runoff presidential election in Ukraine, with 12 000 international observers acting as supervisors.
- The first survey of language use in China reveals that 53 % of its population can communicate in Mandarin, lower than previous estimates which rank it as the language with the most speakers worldwide.
- Near-Earth asteroid 2004 MN4 gets the highest warning ever of a four on the ten-point Torino scale. Astronomers say it has a 1 in 37 chance of collision with Earth on April 13, 2029, but continue to observe it to increase the accuracy of the prediction.
