- The strongest earthquake in 40 years, with a magnitude of 8.9, rocks the Indian Ocean off Sumatra; subsequent tsunamis result in thousands of deaths in Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Thailand and other coastal regions adjacent to the temblor.
- A rerun of the runoff presidential election takes place in Ukraine, scrutinized by about 12,000 international observers.
