Career

Music

Blackery's first EP, ‘Human Behaviour’, was released in early 2012.[8] Blackery initially created her YouTube channel, emmablackery, to promote her music. In July 2013, Blackery released her second EP, ‘Distance’, accompanied by a music video for the lead track, ‘Go the Distance’. The music video was uploaded to her main YouTube channel and currently has more than 1,600,000 views.[9] The EP reached No. 1 on the iTunes Rock chart within the first week of its release.[10][11] Blackery released her third EP, ‘Perfect’, on 11 November 2014, her 23rd birthday,[12] and the song ‘Perfect’ entered the UK Rock & Metal Singles Chart at number 8.[13] Her fourth EP, ‘Sucks to Be You’, came out in 2016.[14][15] The single peaked at No. 85 on the Scottish Singles Chart.[16]

On 4 April 2016, Blackery announced that she would be joining pop punk band Busted as a special guest on their Pigs Can Fly Tour 2016.[17] She toured by herself in October 2016 and from May to June 2017.[18] She also occasionally performs at YouTube events.[19] ‘Sucks to Be You’ was the runner-up for the first Summer in the City Song of the Year award.[20]

In April 2017, she launched her Vevo channel, with the videos for ‘Nothing Without You’, ‘Don't Come Home’, and ‘Magnetised’.[21][22] On 26 May, Blackery released her fifth EP, ‘Magnetised’.[23] On 2 June, the EP debuted at No. 63 on the UK Albums Chart, becoming her first EP to chart on the Official Album Chart.[24] The EP peaked at No. 5 on the UK Independent Album Chart and No. 2 on the Official Independent Album Breakers Chart.[25][26] On 6 August, Blackery received a Summer in the City Song of the Year award for ‘Nothing Without You’.[27][28] The music video for ‘Nothing Without You’ has also achieved over 1,250,000 views on YouTube. The cover art for ‘Magnetised’ was also featured in the Apple Keynote event for the iPhone X in September 2017.[29]

On 16 March 2018 Blackery released the single ‘Dirt’, distributed as FLAC under her RWG Records label.[30] The song entered the UK iTunes chart at Number 28 and rose as high as number 15. ‘Dirt’ has approximately 948k streams on Spotify thus far. Furthermore, the ‘Dirt’ music video which was released on the same date on her Vevo Channel has amassed over 1 million views so far.[31][32] She was due to tour Europe in March 2018, but the dates were rescheduled for October 2018.[33][34]

On 30 April 2018 Blackery announced that her next single ‘Agenda’ would be released on 4 May 2018. A lyric video was released alongside the single release on Blackery's Vevo account.[35] The official music video was released on 22 May. [36] She later released ‘Icarus’ and ‘Take Me Out’.[37][38][39][40]

On 22 May 2018 Blackery announced her debut album, ‘Villains’, which was released on 31 August 2018.[41][42] In June she performed ‘Third Eye’ live at the 9th VidCon Night Of Awesome.[43] She then partnered with HMV for a UK-wide tour where she did small in-store performances and album signings. The album reached #5 in the Pop ITunes Charts as well as being in the top 20 Official UK Charts.[44]

Book

Blackery released a book she wrote called Feel Good 101: The Outsiders' Guide to a Happier Life, based upon a series featured on her main channel. In September 2017, the book was released and went on to become a best-seller.[45][46][47][48]

YouTube

Blackery currently has three active YouTube channels, and multiple previously active channels which have either been deleted, left inactive,[49] or re-branded into new channels.[50]

  • Emma Blackery – Blackery's main channel, created in May 2012, on which she hosts her primary content including vlogs, music videos, comedy sketches and other miscellaneous content. She began to gain a following from reading excerpts from Fifty Shades of Grey on her channel, but these videos were later removed due to copyright complaints.[51] During her Fifty Shades of Grey series, Blackery also began uploading comedy vlogs, inspired by Shane Dawson and Dan Howell.[52] Some of her most viewed videos which are public as of April 2018 are The Sims in Real Life with over 3.7 million video views and If Websites Started dating which has over 3.2 million video views, showing the most popular of her online videos to fit in with her target audience of teens aged 14-19
  • Vloggery – Blackery's second active channel which is dedicated to vlogs, tips, advice, serious talk subjects and any other content in which she feels doesn’t belong on her main channel.
  • EmmaBlackeryVEVO – Blackery also has a channel created solely to upload her music videos, including "Nothing Without You (Official Video)", "Magnetised (Official Video)", "Don't Come Home (Official Lyric Video)", "Dirt", "Dirt (Acoustic)", "Agenda (Lyric Video)", "Agenda (Official Video)", "Icarus (Lyric video)" and "Take Me Out".[7]

In 2017 she expressed her unhappiness with YouTube Rewind.[53] Her video My thoughts on Google+ was viral in 2013 and updated at the end of 2018 to celebrate the end of Google+.[54][55]

In April 2018 she experimented with a paid promotion in Cute Without Ya published under a CC-BY licence.[56]
